I'm desperate to get something besides popcorn to work for me... Made 12 PF jars and had room for room for 2 pints in the PC... Didn't want to waste space so what the heck...

I'm out of spores so I must use 2 month old honey water, non fridge... Looks healthy but cross yer fingers...

PF...Black Soy Bean...Chick Pea

I'll keep it updated, fail or not...

Thanx for the link Hip but I haven't made a single syringe from a print work to date, many tries... My white thumb works when it wants to... Only way I ever succeded was from syringe or jar printing...

I tried black beans in a pint jar just to see the contrast, but alas! all my current ventures have ended in green or black mold!
though one jar of the MANY has not turned green, black, yellow or brown. and it is cool.

Ya know, now I am wishing I did more than 1 pint of those peas and beans... It's going to be a small casing I guess... If it fruits at all I will do more we can draw some kind of conclusion... To the guy who is trying it tomorrow you may want to think about that too...

1 week from innoc... it may not fruit well but it's looking like a great quick spawn substrate... am i the only one impressed with chick peas speed?

chick peas are about 85%, black soy beans about 70% and pf are about 60%...

I think since the peas are larger than popcorn, that explains the fast colonization. Popcorn colonizes a jar faster than rye because there's so much less surface area to be colonized, hence much less mycelium is produced. Remember, the smaller the grains, the more total surface area will be available for colonization, and therefore the more mycelium will be produced.

I'm not making the 'more points of inoculation' argument, but rather the 'more total mycelium' argument. It's actually on quite a large magnitude. I have a physics formula somewhere in my old textbooks to calculate total surface area of different sized marbles in a given space. Smaller marbles had up to ten times the surface area of larger marbles when each was used to fill a certain size cylinder. If it makes it easier to understand, think of the huge gaps between larger marbles, (chick peas vs. rye) which is wasted space. With smaller grains, those gaps are mostly filled in, then colonized, resulting in more total myc.

agreed.
but speed is an advantage when it comes to beating out competitors.
so it's not entirely a drawback.

They were canned along with the black soy beans... Opened can, rinsed for about 20 min, loaded and PCed...

Heh, I thought this was going to be a failed project so I'm not sure what to do with it now... I guess expecting the worse is a good idea... Casing, cake...?

Casing... whole grains don't give up water fast enough to grow good shrooms without a casing.

Thats what i've read at least.

you might dump it in the bottem of a wide mouth quart jar and case it in the same jar... good size for test runs.

I cased 2 pints of chick pea's on the 25th... I was working in open air like usual... When I went to crumble and case the peas just pealed away from the myc... I bet you could remove all the peas and have pure myc in a glovebox, I dunno why you would want to thoguh... It re-colonized and cased it on 27th...

Chick peas on the right with a slight lead... Got 2 similiar popcorn casings to give me something to compare it to...

Well, I'm shocked... The chick pea casing pulled back together but has failed to pin/fruit... It's on the right, 2 on the left are the opcorn... I'm going to leave it for 1 more flush, will remove it from the tin and take a pic at that time... Right now it looks perfect, but missing mushrooms... :/

Upload

Oh yeah... Black Soy beans colonized OK but got some nasty brown rot and I tossed it... My PF jars colonized perfect and were used in homemade spawn bags to more PF mixture...

Well, about the time the popcorn flushed the chickpeas started to pin... Not many and not big... I would guess not very potent either...
