At first I thought this was a sure sign of contam... I have 12 jars of WBS that did not colonize, all have this nasty brown shit on the tape covering innoc holes... None of the jars have visable contam though... I can feel air pressure bubbling up over the hole, is this just the tape filtering out the bad stuff?
HAPPY EASTER! :-)

my my.
what happened here ?
it got wet, yes ?
jars will likely contam,
i'd switch lids in a glovebox ASAP
archive material to lids/filters
great pic, should be helpful.

btw, did you mean you can feel air coming out of the jar ?
that's a very bad sign, likely fermentation.

Tape did not get wet... I got this on all 12 jars of WBS I tried to get going... If you put your finger over the hole that is taped you can feel air trying to push out... I even tried every way in the archives with these jars to hydrate the WBS...

Not sure what the hell is going on actually... Jars started to colonize and quicly stalled, 3 weeks later I had brown tape gallore... ? Jars never contamed either, just stalled; and it's maybe 2 months old by now...

ah, but i bet the tape DID get wet,
on the underside.
proly yeasts in the jar.
why it stalled.
spores flew up, hit wet lid and grew.
but i'm just guessing,
i'd need to see much more.
