After screwing around with a couple of designs for a dessicant tub, I kept running into small problems like the moisture not draining properly and small aborts falling into the dessicant. Then by chance I walk by the tupperware section of my local store and spot what looks like the perfect solution.
Just the usual cheap "gladware" style tubs that stack inside one another. I think it was 5 of 'em for 2 bucks. I noticed that when stacked there was a 1/2 inch plus gap between the bottoms, a perfect amount of room for a layer of Dry-Out. So, with the help of my drill, I turned one upside down, and perforated the bottom with a bunch of holes. This one will hold the shrooms.
I repeated this step on another, drilling fewer holes. This one will hold the dessicant, and the holes will allow any moisture to drain out.
And that's about it. Just start with one un-drilled one. Slide in the one with just a few holes. Add Dessicant. Then slide in your shroom holding one, add shrooms and cover with a lid.
Easy, cheap, small....I love it!

Cool! I just made one from a tupperware/gladware thingie.I cut a hole in the lid for a small 12V PC fan,and drilled a bunch of holes around the side. After the mushies are 90% dry,I put them in the dessicant tub to finish them off.Works great! It seems those little Gladware containers have 1001 uses in this hobby. |

Thanks for all the kind words everybody! It's pretty darn airtight, you just have to give the top a little downward push. I suppose you could wrap the outside in some saran wrap if you can't find ones that fit together perfectly. I picked these containers up at Kmart, if that helps in finding them. 5 in one package. Except when your using the type of dessicant that liquifies, i.e. calcium chloride, Damp Rid, etc... I started out just using a screen in a single container, but the moisture sucked out of the mushrooms turns the dessicant into a soggy mess. Kinda hard to drain and I'm sure that sitting in liquid reduces it's effectiveness. Hence the dessicant sits in a perforated container with another solid container underneath it to collect the liquid.

probably calcium chloride [a popular brand is damp rid]. go find it at the home despot. ask where the dessicant/damp-rid is. might be by the painting section. |

a nice dessicant i like is silica gel/crystals used for drying flowers so it's at most craft stores, cheap too like $7 for 5 pounds never liquifies just heat to re-use no nasty foul taste if it accidently touches the shrooms
