After harvesting my first shroom and noticing 24 pins on my other cakes, I realized I had nothing to dry them yet. So I needed some desiccant but the tips about damp rid and stuff do me no good since I live in Europe.

First I needed a box which I can seal airtight. My neighbours gave me a box to store potatoes in a month ago and since I really don't like to eat potatoes, I found a good candidate:

I taped the air holes on the sides with tape.

Now to find some desiccant. I went to a hardware shop in the neighbourhood and found this:

This stuff should suck in humidity in an area of 40 square meters for 3/4 months so I figured it would be enough for my potatoes box. It only costed about 4 dollars

Put in my crappy humidity meter which told me it was 40% in the living room. After an hour it reached 0. Now my very first harvested shroom is hopefully going cracker dry, it has been predried on my monitor near the window:

Any comments?

the stuff you got looks like its the same thing as damp rid.
as for drying you might want to try stringing the shrooms up by the base in a card board box with a fan blowing on them to get them soewhat dry and then putting them in the dessicant chamber. its cheaper than just using dessicant.

Just some more info for the archives then. I got this stuff in France from mr Bricolage. Should be available in Holland as well, try Gamma (dat zeg ik :-) ). There are refills available for when the stuff is satisfied but I suspect you can open the bag with the decissant and bake it in the oven. Gonna try that anyway for recycling purpose.

Grasshopper, nice idea, I'm going to build something like that for predrying as well. I have a couple of old computer fans and psu's lying around to use for that.

Just an update, my first shroom went cracker dry overnight. This setup is a keeper :-)
