I'll tell ya, first time with this log approach and really working with straw... I like it... seems really simple. I'll post a pic in a day or so... The mycelium is already spreading quickly.

1 qt of rye grain spawn. Was going to use 4, but they were sitting in my closet for many months and only 1 of the 4 was still good not covered in yellow ick. Here's another update a few days later, still growing strong! It's a foggy, but you can get the idea.

Another bit of interesting info: there are some bits of grass in there (oh no, let me here the contam warnings now! hehe). To cut the straw I first mowed my lawn in a spot really shot, over and over, the raised the mower slightly, emptied the catcher well, and layed down the straw. Ran if over with the mower, sucked it up, boom, nice cut straw in the catcher. Some old grass was bound to get caught up and there is a small amount in the log. Hardly noticeable, but thought I would mention it anyway.

Very impressed, under 10 days and she's almost all nice and white. Should make that 2 week contam mark. :-) Then we see if she fruits. KING OYSTERs baby. Good for stir fry perhaps???

Here's the update Hippie... I slit it on the top to encourage her to fruit. It's been about 2 weeks since I spawned it. I have also placed it in a terrarium and am fanning slightly more then I would cubbies. I have read these like air exchange. I have also begun to mist the log itself, on the top where the slits are, because I also read it is good to produce a rain effect on them. Here's some updated pics so far. No contams, solid block. Very impressed I am :-)

I'm trying to discourage here to fruit on the bottom as she's sitting in my terrarium a 10gallon fish tank with perlite. Think it's good? Bad? Suggestions? :-)

light is what triggers fruiting
perlite might make it worse as it reflects light

Here she is, plastic cut off, laying in the corner instead of on her side flat... Got a bit messed with me handling her, but I think now that the plastic is off, it will breath better and whiten up really nice. It's quite solid. Again, I'm impressed for my first even log attempt.

Well, birthing and handling with the summer spore count has caused it to contam. I don't consider it lost however. The log seemed very moist and I split her in two outside under a shrub. Will see what happens. I split it to see if it was good inside or not, sure thing, good all the way though, so contams from the outside. Doh! Try try some more.

I've got a few different oysters that are supposed to do better than the KO's... so, those are getting grain-prepped next. Pearl Oyster and Pink Oyster.

King Oysters are dank.
I fruited King Oysters this summer on Straw + cottonseed meal outside. The harvest was meager. I wonder if straw alone is really enough for fruiting.

Several weeks ago I had a 50 gallon sterlite half full of straw and CS meal but it contamed and I buried it outside with another dozen quarts of spawn. I've been trying to keep it moist; however, we hadn't gotten any rain in a month and a half. Temps have finally dipped. if I am going to see shrooms, then they should be popping by the end of next week.

I'm about to start another indoor project w/ king oysters. Probably going to try straw+soybean meal, woodchips (populus grandidentata), and a corn cob based substrate.
