all these are probably what you'd consider a "first flush". total wet weight was over 500gm.

there's lots of pins coming up right now, and it's also raining as well, so the patch should be happy. mainly followed this tek:
Easy Outdoor grow

but to be more specific:
6 pints of grain were used, all growing the same clone of mazapatec. some were rye berries and others were bird seed.
dug a hole in the garden, and placed some sheep manure from wally world down. about 1/3 of the 25lb bag.
put down the colonised grain, then the rest of the manure.
then spread out some compost bought at home depot, and topped it with a small bag of peat moss.

watered generously, and since it's usually pretty dry around here, the hose was left to drip next to the patch.
once pins were seen, they were protected from rain with some plastic bags (just set some grocery bags down - looks trashy, but it also helps curious eyes from looking at them).
and couldn't have asked for better weather. we've had perfect temps lately around here, with a little bit of rain here and there.

also, just to mention, no pasturization or anything was done whatsoever to the manure or compost. was going to put lime on it, but couldn't find any, and it hasn't been a problem yet.

My God! How could I have overlooked this thread until now?

I think I mistook it for one with pics that were so big that it would have taken 30 minutes for the page to load. My ancient Compaq can't handle those!

Hell yes, that's exactly what I like to see....gives me encouragement for next spring/summer. Breathtaking work!:-)

not much for updates on this right now - there's been a few decent singles shoot up, but no more clumps :-(

although it's pinning heavily right now, there's some doubt that they will develop into maturity, as there was a cold front that came through recently and winter may have finally arrived.
(temps are all of a sudden going around/below 50 at night and barely reaching 70 during the day)

have you mulched the patch ?
a nice thick layer of dry straw as cover
might help extend the season
as would a cold-frame over the patch

Namaste
