Nice logs MeNo!!! I thought you could usually only get 1 flush out of straw before contams. Most things I've read say that one flush is about all they are good for. Thanks for dunking and posting as I will try to dunk mine too after the first flush. Did you dunk in just water, or h2o2 water? Thanks for sharing!!! That looks sweet, nice pinset! I don't know Kung Fu, But I know Freaky!

we shall see how effective dunking is for straw and logs. i am currently dunking my 18" log in a bleach water dip/dunk for about 10-12 hours. ill keep you posted. and im not even really being too gentle. im really manhandling my log, pushing it around as needed to get into the container. lets see how things go. thats amazing

Log was dunked in cold tap water and put right into the refrig.
Behind the log is straw that was once cased in trays. It was taken out after 3 flushes. All of casing layer was taken off but 1/8 of an inch. Dunked for 24 hrs., flipped so casing is on bottom now and plastic wrap was put over top for humidity and will be kept over until pins form.

I'm finding that straw logs are sometimes worth keeping around for a 2nd flush. It may be small, but all you have to do is let it sit around for another week. That looks like it will produce a very nice 2nd flush! You must be doing something right! Excellent job! "I hear colors and see sounds"

1. Wooden dowel wiped with alc. pad pushed down the center. 2. Weed eater line also wiped with an alc. pad put down the hole that was made. 3. Plastic disk was on bottom of line to support weight of log. simple hole in the disk with knot on end of line. Enough line left to tie up to cross bar in grow room.

Log is very Blue now. Picked most of the shrooms but left some of the smaller ones to grow more. I'm going to pick the log clean this morning and then dunk for a 2nd time. This time with some h2o2 added to the tap water just to be safe. We'll see if shes got a 3rd flush in her. I'll keep everyone posted. |

I dunk 'em til they stop giving fruits and I get at least three flushes, usually, or I can pick 'em for about 4-5 weeks, roughly. The second and third flushes, together, usually equal, or are just a bit more than, the first flush. PB

trich, though, is an environmental factor, it's not inherent in dunking straw, it's a factor that can be eliminated and success can be achieved as MeNo has done. you seem to have a lot of trich in your locale, rodger, and so did i. i often wonder if our hobby in itself doesn't create conditions favorable to trich so that if one grows long enough the environment inevitably becomes trich-rich. once it strikes, it just persists in the area each occurance making matters even worse until one is constantly beset by that infernal green mold at every turn. at least, that's how it seemed to me. a change in setting can help beat that. but in a nice clean environment dunking straw just makes sense, you're gonna throw it out anyway might as well go for the gusto.

Agreed. I have it pretty well under control, but I never attempt straw projects in the summer. I'm located just downwind from a very large rainforest. It makes me shiver when mrs. rabbit and I go backpacking. There are thousands of entire trees laying on the ground covered with trich. When we get home, we strip outside, then walk into the house naked to deposit our clothes in the washing machine and ourselves into the shower. Winter is definitely better for the hobby around here. Certainly if one has a clean enough environment, it looks as though dunking works, as we can so easily see from the excellent photos above.
