Also, the PF materials instruct one to fill the jar then tamp the substrate material down, but others say not to, what is best? I would like to use the double ended invitro casing tek. Tripster (Tripster) Posted on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 12:37 am: I have just started growing my own PF cakes(with wonderful growth thus far!), and I have watched others do it as well. A friend of mine did just a few of their jars tamped down and the only real difference was that they took a few more days to completely colonize. I tamped all of mine down to get a good dry verm layer on top and the jars are turning out just fine, just don't press down hard on the substrate. As far as the lids go, I had mine just loose enough so that they could be twisted freely and then I tightened them as I took them out of the steamer. I hope this helps and good luck. I think as long as you have the two piece jar lids the jars won't crack. I've innoculated 20 jars and all have superb growth. I didn't leave them loose at all. And I didn't pack my substrate either, I like it as loose as possible. But I do try to keep it level before I fill the rest with vermiculite. TS Saluras (Saluras) Posted on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 11:39 pm: this is interesting, i've tamped down substrate and those cakes seem to fruit longer and generally last longer, where as the looser substrate seems to colonize faster and not last quite as long. as far as the jars cracking, just keep them off the direct heat when sterilizing. I always tighten my lids (2 pc). seems to work fine for me. Shroom Glossary Kevin Smith (Canshroom) Posted on Saturday, December 08, 2001 - 04:57 pm: The only jars I can get are the ones with two-piece tops, wich have served me well so far. I plan to reuse the jars themselves, but I'm wondering if either of the lid pieces can be used again. I'm assuming that the lid itself cannot be, since there are holes in it and it has been stressed by the process to date. Can the bands that hold the lids in place be used again? I would think that they could be & it would be a lot cheaper if that were true, since I could then buy only the replacement lids and not both pieces. Also, when I birth these cakes, can I just leave them on top of the perlite using the lid only as a base, or should the band still be there as well? Thanks hippie3 (Hippie) Posted on Saturday, December 08, 2001 - 05:05 pm: both bands and lids are re-useable many times. i would not lay them directly onto perlite though, as they will rust. place them on a standoff screen or plastic grid or place onto foil squares instead.
