Well...not for dehydrating food, necessarily...

Nothing wrong with desiccant, I just figured that a dehydrator is even easier, just toss in moist product, turn on, and come back in a few hours.

So, I'm wondering what we know about food dehydrators. Is there more involved in your typical food dehydrator than a fan and a heating element we want to disconnect anyway?

If it's just a fan pushing air through a container, seems a shame to spend 40 bucks or more on something one could build for 20...or even less...

Anyone have thoughts on this?

I don't intend to get in a debate about what drying methods are better, here, just wondering how your typical dehydrator functions, I guess.

Yeah, me again. Well, I've found a tiny bit of info on food dehydrators, the basic info can be found at http://www.toxictommy.com/blower.html

So, looks like it's just a fan and a heater. We want no heater, so, a dehydrator is a fan which circulates air through a container, pushing out moist air, pulling in new, drier air.

I'm sold. I'm gonna look for a cheap fan this weekend, and see what I can do, I'll let you all know if it works at all.

i came across an old dehydrator(and i mean old, constructed of wood) at a garage sale it had a fan and a heating element and blew horizontally(which is the wrong way if you are drying mushies) so i took out the 8 17 inch screens(just like window screens) and their brackets, i measured my fan(model on a stand that ossilates(spelling?)) it happenend to be 17 inches, so i constructed a box with an open top and bottom 17" by 48" with 12 inch space at top 6 screens and a milk crate at the bottm so air can get through(blowing from top to bottom) it works beautiful, but watch your # of screens as they will cut down on air flow its big, but it holds a lot of mushies, i have success with 24 hour fan drying -crisp with no desiccant

has anyone tried dry ice? i heard(i dont beleive everything i hear) that it affects potency for the better

All my friend does to dehydrate her mushies (no matter how large) is this..

She has a small (6") table fan... she puts the mushies on a paper towel and then tapes the ends of the paper towel to the fan so the mushies are right in front of the fan... kinda like the grille...

24 hours of drying..

then into the desiccant chamber

the desiccant chamber is a can of damp rid... qand the can comes with a little black plastic cup inside the jar to hold the damp rid... the damp rid is actually now placed underneath that cup (the second half of the damp-rid jar) and the mushies placed in the black cup, above the desiccant... the jar is then closed. She covers hers with saran wrap/rubber band to make sure no air gets in. 2 days of that and theyre cracker/bone dry

I've dusted off my old Ronco food dehydrator and twist-tied one of the trays to my fan (vornato) that tilts upward. I can add as many tray as needed and it's FAST due to a high powered fan. I didn't want to screw with the dehydrators base so I did it this way.

What's the final word on drying and psylocin/psylocibin content? Does drying negatively affect potency?

If so, what about freezing fresh mushies?

i love freshies i think(imo) that they have better potency
however some of my freinds prefer dry
as far as freezing(just my opinion)
it is not good for them
(no one has tried dry ice to dry them?- i heard it kicks ass from an old hippie(not hippie3)-but have yet to try it due to my beliefs on freezing)

I have posted in the past that freezing a substance most often cause it physical damge, especially if it has a high water content (mushies - 90% H2O), but if said shrooms were coated in an oil and frozen, they should be okay. Any thoughts?

I'll have a go at the dry ice question... It's the same as sticking them in the freezer. Dry ice will not remove water... Freezing does not remove water (so they will be a slimy/gummy black mess when thawed typically). In order to stabilize the mushroom tissue you have to remove the water without adding heat: fan drying followed by desiccant works best for most people.

Dry ice is just going to freeze them it will not remove the water.

The dry ice isnt for freezing, you dry them and then put a piece of it in there, it melts into just CO2. W/o O2 in ther eit cant oxidise the psilocin.
Problem is dry ice is hard to get, therefor I suggest good old baking soda and viniger

Ahhh... Air displacement tek, thank's for clarifying that. My fav is the good 'ole Serve-n-Saver vacuum bagger storage system. It's $100 at Wally Mart, and worth every penny of it for shroom storage.

the dude who told me about it said it dried them- it never made much sense to me but i wanted to know if anyone had tried it- anyway the guy swore by it and told me the potency of my fan dried shrooms pale in comparison(although the shrooms he had used were wild-and this species may be the cause) he said they would be dry in 24 hours

Well you have to get _all_ the water out first. So fan drying followed by desiccant is required before you can even consider long term storage. Once they are cracker hard, you can either cap em, vacuum seal em, or place them in jars and displace the air with inert gas or C02.

But to be honest, keeping the air away from them is secondary to making sure they are bone dry. They are both damned important. Keep the light away from them too...

If there is potency loss in cool drying it is insignificant.
