The lamp calls for 40 watt or less bulbs and all I got for low wattage bulbs are colored. Just wondering if it will work or I gotta buy a real bulb

"Blue light has profound effects on many plants and fungi. In plants there are at least two blue photoreceptors, with a hint of a family on the horizon. The blue photoreceptors control:

why risk it...the cost is very minimal. it would suck to have less than great results over a couple of dollar item. if you have to, use it for a couple days but get a real bulb as soon as you can. are you usiing a closet setup or what? my friend put a disposable fluro in his closet..works awesome for only about 10$. it even comes with little clip so you can mount it wherever. just a suggestion!!

real sunlight seems to work better, imo.
so at least try to get something close,
like a reptile light at the pet store, i think they have 40 watt versions.
or a grow bulb designed for plants.
a bit expensive but worthwhile.

maybe you should try using both in two seperate set ups and report your findings back here so we have some first hand experience. in plants, the spectrum of light affects many different aspects of the growth, like phototropism, internodal length, flowering rates, etc. maybe mushrooms will react differently too, because like hippie said they work best in sunlight and sunlight has a good colour spectrum
