[A Flat Cake Tek]

These are my pics of my flat cake that I sliced into three equal parts. I noticed that most flat cakes have most of the shrooms around the edges and very little on the top, so I thought that I would try something new and create more edges. I covered a paper plate with verm and then cased the top of the cake with more verm. I also filled in the gaps with a little verm. These were from 3 hawaiian jars. pinned about 2 days ago and more still forming. Some pins are butting heads but I am hoping that they will fan out and grow huge. High hopes
By the way , the first three pics were my first flush ever of any shrooms. They were Hawaiian. Kinda proud of those too.

8-O = me with jaw hanging open. Great idea patrick.. Too bad I already cut all my cakes in half then double end-cased them all together like nan suggested ;) Thanks for the idea for my next batch though, as soon as I can afford some syringes.

One thing though, you said twice you split it into 3 equal parts.. I see 4? Same idea though.. :)Eh.. This just remind me of splitting cakes in half.. instead of 1 cake, you get 2 cakes, plus more surface area... Might even try fruiting a cake that's been split into 3rds. Then one can conceivable make 3 cakes from 1 half pint pf jar.. oh what fun that'd be.

Great Danes, Patrick- congratulations! I am in strict admiration of the thinking processes to boot. You must be about as pleased as a new father...:)

If I'm not mistaken, that total flush is going to be more than 3 jars would have been, from the pix I have been seeing on this board. Dang, way to go!

Wow- congratulations feller.

XunkyherbX I used a paper plate underneath it and the ends of the third piece was hanging over on each side so I cut this in half too. The idea of this was to increase the edges or where the caseing and the cake meet. Not to increase surface area. I don't know how well cutting 1 jar into 3 slices, might be too thin but give it a shot. Take a cake and slice it in increaseing slices to determine what actually might be the minimium thickness.( as a matter of fact I will try this next time) Might decrease future flushes but if you can get three times as much from 1 flush then 3 why not.
This was from 3 jars. I did notice that only 1 shroom on the whole thing is growing on the top. But there are probably about 50 pins under all of this that you can't see in the pics that I am afraid will never make it to the top. I have noticed on other cakes that when shrooms push against each other they bruise and I have seen bruiseing on some cakes before where it started to make some of them rot. So I might have to trim some of them back to allow others to grow.
In the future or next time I try this I would increase the spacing at least another half inch to allow more grow room.

Pat, now i see your idea. that is a great crop and my props to you for the great idea. I would suggest one thing though. I see the paper plate as contamination later on. i would get rid of it and use some kind of plastic lid. otherwises that kicks tail. the hawaiians always grow on the sides. i havn't really had any that grow straight from the mycelia. but if you try some different strains you will have different results. keep us posted on the new pics of that harvest. That cake with the hawaiians doesn't look like hawaiians to me. oh well shrooms have a strange way of growing sometimes.

Ya I didn't have any plastic around and I wanted to keep my grow room semi-clean. Not that I could reuse the paper plate a second time anyways
(water logged paper does not hold up very well ) I've noticed that the mycelia has grown through the plate in the front (maybe the back too but I can't see and it would tear the plate to turn it around)The Pics of the cake are from the same syringe as the flat cake
(AKA: Canyon of Pins ) I was fanning it and ripped the tallest shrooms cap in half. Oh well. Maybe it will keep on growing

Harvested most of them. Uncovered a few pins that I am going to give a chance to grow some more. Total of three abhorts amongst it all. I love hawaiian. I may have let the sit for a little while longer than I should have but I did not have the time this morning to harvest them. So total harvest tally so far 367 grams wet....What sucks is that I only have a scale that goes up to 50 grams so it took some time to weight them. FullClose UpBox O Shrooms

Liberty,
you flip the cake over with the verm side facing down. what strain is it? if hawaiian i suggest you do what pat did and if pf classic you should grow straight from the white mycelia. you know the cake is ready when it looks very thick and grown together.

Pat,
I have something else you might try. this works well with my texas strain and tc's. sometimes i would have problems or break the cakes by accident so i tried this. i crumbled the cakes after the first flush and made a big pile of the cakes. then it turned out rather nice like that picture of you harvest. i have adapted this a little now similar to the way that you did it. but instead i place some of the cakes on top. i may have one flat cake( a smaller one or a broken piece) stacked on top of another. i have found fruiting to work quite well this way. And Pat i think you have stumbeled apon something. Some of the strains like to grow on the sides such as tc's, hawaiians, maz, and others. i would suggest that you use this method with these strains. if you like this harvest you should definately try pf classic but grow straight from the white mycelia. the only problem with pf classic is that the 2nd flush kinda sux. Now, clean off the primordia and scrape all verm off. dunk for 6 hours then damp out with a paper towel and apply another double ended casing tek using the same method as b4 and see if your harvest isn't as good as the first. i have had numerous flushes that have been equivelant if not better in the second flush. maybe you and i should get together and update my flat cake tek and add a tek of your own to it or make a version 2 or something. you know what may be cool. try to do the samething you did but stack a couple on top of each other and see how that turns out. it may be a very cool picture.

Drying complete. Came out to 28 grams. I was hoping for more but the little bastards shrunk to much.

hippie3. I took the first pictures on Thursday morning. The were pretty advanced pinning by then. So around three to four days. They never really grew very big. The biggest were 5 to 6 inches but there were few of those. Mostly around 3 to 4 inches.

Brad never got further than 48. That was about half.

Eatyualive I have a ton of experiments running through my head that I would like to try. But I have very little room to grow. I also only have PFC and hawaiian spores to experiment with. Now here is a little background on me. I am an electrical engineer by trade. So I am very analytical. You have a very nice tek that works well. Mine, could of been a fluke. I only have 8 weeks since I inoculated my first jars so I still consider myself a newbie. But, I love solving things and figuring them out. So we'll keep your tek the way it is ( for now ).I've
got a few things in the works developed from the
previous try. I will post them as soon as I have some sort of results. Too soon to tell. I like to be thorough. I would also like to tap into your knowledge and since you have that nice grow chamber maybe even have you help me run a few experiments. I am also a lonestar boy myself.
