holy shit cyans, you could proly auction it off for a fortune. Not that you'd want to.

I gotta say everything seems easy now, but I remember my first wbs - I was never much of a pf tek guy. I only did it once actually- that it worked.

Posted by: eatyualive Mar 30 03, 02:42 PM GMT
kickass. hehe my foaf has tried that tek b4 from that exact book back in the day!

Posted by: Voodoo Mar 30 03, 03:01 PM GMT
I was in Canada a while back and a head shop had that book for sale. Ten bucks. I should have grabbed it.

Posted by: BadPunk6 Mar 30 03, 03:50 PM GMT
wow.....that makes me feel really young

Posted by: Sgt.Poop Mar 31 03, 01:10 PM GMT
its a cool way to do it.. cause all you do is add casing too the top of it... when my friend first started that's what he did,, but i swear you won't get many contams + the depth of the substrate can make for some biggys, and he said you can get from 5-7 flushes...

Posted by: flatalbert Mar 31 03, 01:16 PM GMT
My dad said something about it when I was a youngun that he had that book back in the day. T'was before my time. Very nice.

The only thing that people would have to worry about is pins on the side, but when the cake shrinks, some casing can be crammed down in there or foil can be put over the sides before casing.

Kind of like taking a PF jar with contam barrier and opening it up once colonized.

Beautymous! Good work.

Peace
Flat

Posted by: dcyans Apr 12 03, 08:54 AM GMT
40+ dried 1st flush

Posted by: ShroomVator Apr 13 03, 12:58 AM GMT
Not bad at all!

Posted by: looselucy Apr 13 03, 09:42 AM GMT
I think people started doing pf tek because they live in the capatilistic west. Terrance and dennis didn't "sell" there product only ideas. PF, as most know from hightimes and web, sold product which is what people wanted. where do I get spores? well if you have the product might as well get info too.

I have that book and did it in the big jars in the early '80s. PF tek and others are superior because there was a high incedence of contamination with the big jars. the vermiculite on top greatly reduces that, and the availability of syringes and flow hood designs really help. I suspect that with all the knowledge available and the attention to sterile technique, the ancient tek would work much better. Also, it was hard to get multiple flushes, and water would pool at the bottom of the big jars and get bacteria.

Just a note, multiple flushes are more likely with more nuts available and also the water that collects in the bottom can be just simply poured out, the casing stays intact BC of the myc network in the casing This was a first attempt in home culture and like with EVERYTHING in the history of life can be improved on. My observation with this tek was the lack of surface area and that you need to wrap the jars with foil to keep shrooms from growing in the sides of the jars as they are more difficult to remove and can be a source for contams if left to rot, I just hook them and pull them out, so far so good This is just a reminder to all of you how it started many years ago and is just something to keep a mycologist from getting board with the same old teks. flat cakes are far superior to this tek as are many other teks Its just a twist thats all

Posted by: maryxmas May 01 03, 12:06 AM GMT
what are some specifics on the tek

xmas
Posted by: dcyans May 01 03, 06:55 AM GMT
Rye grain? in jars and cased? water that does accumulate in the jars can just be carefully poured out so i suppose one cold dunk the cake easily between flushes. also need to wrap jars with foil (i didn't) because its a bugger to get the ones out that have grown between cake and jar. jars are good for 4+ flushes

I sure am glad you did not say TOO old.

Posted by: flatalbert May 01 03, 09:07 PM GMT
Yeah, you guys are like, crusty or something. . .

MaryXmas- innoc'd grain cased IN the jar. The sides are covered so they don't pin in the jar where they can't be picked.

Peace
Flatty

it must suck to be that old and have to get up 4 times to pee when you are tripping or having to remember to put on a fresh Depends before partaking in the forbidden fruit.

Heres a forth flush BONUS

Posted by: dcyans May 08 03, 06:53 AM GMT
This large one weighed in at a wopping 24.5 gms.

Posted by: flatalbert May 08 03, 08:47 AM GMT
With substrate that thick and tall, you are bound to get some big un's. The only disadvantage I would see is that you will get some on the side (even with foil covering the sides) that can be picked and they would get rotty.

Good job mang.
Peace

Not too shabby ol' timer.

Posted by: Zoom Aug 20 03, 09:26 PM GMT
Foaf still uses this tek every once in a while.
Especially if the spawn is gettig too old to case. ( Doesn't recolonize as well, prone to contams.)
or, exotic specie like Pans (nature of their mycelium prone to contams). He's found that the less
you disturb the myc the better chance of getting a small amount of fruits. Better than none.

He's gonna try doin some P Tamps like that in a month or so.
It should work, provided they get good airflow.

Thanks for the pics DCyans. Brings back a lot of memories when this was the only way to go.

getting old is not for sissies

Posted by: Nanook Aug 21 03, 04:25 PM GMT
I will second that... If you want to look good when you are older, there has got to be some hurt & sacrifice along with eating well and proper rest... No in between...
