I'm guessung that you most likely pced the bible to get it sterilized. Then after tyhat soaked it in a nutrient tea or not if the pages were hemp. Then make a whole in the center of the book so that you can place some colonized substrate ex. colonized popcorn, rye berries.. andclose the book and place it in a terrarium and then wholla Bible mushies. How was that? Any good? Huh Rodger?

for the record- i deleted the posts by myself and joebob, to clean up the thread, can't have folks taking a crap in rodger's yard. joebob is also history as he seemed to prefer confrontation over adaptation.

Aight then. I'm gonna guess that he soaked it first, either in nute water or just water(who knows with rodger, probably beer and coffee!)I'm guessing that he sterilized it Via pcing. After that he probably layed a few pieces of myc off of agar in between a few select pages and let nature do the rest. Maybe he also cut up the pages and or the cover to give the myc a place to go. I think that my answer is probably just like one of your answers though. Hehehehehe. I just didn't post because I figured one of you were right. Microscopes are my hobby. I do not cultivate anything.

My guess is that he perforated the cover and carved out a portion of the insides pages, pasturized via hot water and filled the cavity with some kind of spawn material, perhaps grain or a brf/verm cake. |

Bingo Nevergrown. We've had lots of replies that were very close. Bits and pieces were right, but not the correct process. No nutrient tea or anything else like honey was used to soak the book. The nutes come from the spawn and the paper. The pages inside were carved out to open up a cavity about the size of a large human hand. The book was placed in cold water in a large pot. It was slowly heated up to 180F, and held there for one hour. After cooling in front of the flow hood, it was inoculated with 1/2 quart of colonized rye grain, placed in a filter patch bag and left alone to fruit invitro. Yes, the cover was perforated to allow pinning at the sites. What really blew me away was that this was a cheap, six dollar bible, printed on the crappiest paper they could find. It looked like newsprint. I was actually looking for an expensive bible, printed on rice paper, but couldn't find one readily, so thought I'd try it with the cheap one. Surprised the heaven outta me that it actually worked. I didn't know these mushrooms were wood product colonizers as well. Ya learn something every day if you're willing to break the rules. I think the correct answer kind of evolved with the thread, so if who cares, PB, and farmer will pm me a safe addy, I'll send a print in a few days when they're ready. I didn't know these mushrooms were wood product colonizers as well. Yeah... this thread has actually inspired me to try log cultivation . I need to find myself a small hardwood log, less dense than oak. Maybe beech or poplar. Need to look around, this is the time of year to get one. Rasilon |

Perhaps try old newspapers or cardboard first. My guess would be that they would have a hard time colonizing a log. "I feel rowdy and I don't know why. . .Excuse me, while I kiss the sky!" jimi hendrix

Well, we know newspaper works... Hippie posted a thread a few days ago where two different people fruited off of newspaper. I'm thinking something smaller than a log, like a 3-4" branch, 6-12 inches long. It'll fit better in my incubator anyway It'll need to be one of the less dense varieties of hardwood, like alder, cottonwood, poplar, etc. I suppose that first I should see if I can get dowels to colonize well, before I worry too much about finding the right branch. So eat those mushies, and let us know if you see god! Rasilon |

Roger : These photos are amazing . You really should make a calendar with pix of all the odd things you've managed to grow off of ( pound of pot , ball of twine , etc. ) . I'd buy one for sure ! Inspiring stuff . -Redmonk |
