If You Desire A NYM Account (Not For Beginners)
#621205 - 04/28/02 09:21 AM
I personally still like them, your ISP or anyone but the nymserver sees your message. If you encrypt the message to somebody with a key, even the nymserver dosn't see it.

NYM is run by people who volunteer to host it, the most popular is nym.alias.net which is run out of M.I.T. or some big ass college. Itís an automated server program and many have used them for years with great results. Other NYMS are redneck.org, cryptofortress, etc.

If you are paranoid even about NYM, try doing some research. There are no cases that I know of the NYM turning people in.

Its a tad tricky to set one up, thatís why many don't use it. If you get it, you have made a good accomplishment. I have one way and it works like a charm, but it still requires some work. I wrote this a time ago and since then have some of the few bugs with Outlook worked out. These instructions will get someone who is pretty good with computers on the right track.

I hope some enjoy this, atleast it's a challange sorta Remember that you have a pretty open selection to unique email names since its difficult to setup for many.

To check to see what names are taken, send an email (without a subject) to [email protected]

Instructions

Installing Quicksilver For NYM Creation By Alien
-------------------------------------------------- ----

You can get these files at ftp://skuz.net/pub/quicksilver

PGP - http://www.pgpi.org/ (you need dos version and windows)

Files needed:

Note: I have numbers before the file names to represent the order in which they
are installed.

1-pgp263i.zip - Old version of PGP (Needed for original key generation)

2-PGPFW703.zip - Windows PGP (Use for easier decryption)

3-QS.9b19.34.exe - Most stable version of Quicksilver I know of

The files below can be auto downloaded through Quicksilvers Update Wizard
If you get these files manually, put them in the "update" sub directory
and point to them when using the Update Wizard. Be sure to ONLY use the
Update Wizard to install these addons. Update Wizard is in the "Help"
dropdown menu.

4-mix29b12.zip - Mixmaster addon

5-QSnym.9b0.23.zip - NYM addon

6-QSpgp.9b10.26.zip - PGP addon

7-QSpop.9b5.6.zip - POP Mail addon

Install PGP

You need to install the old PGP first. Just unzip
this to C:\PGP. I think you have to use this path or it wont work. Im not
totally sure but what does it hurt.

Once thats done, add these lines to your AutoExec.Bat

SET PGPPATH=C:\PGP
SET PATH=C:\PGP;%PATH%
SET TZ=PST8PDT (depends on your timezone, look below)

Here are some sample time codes depending on your time zone:

For Los Angeles: SET TZ=PST8PDT
For Denver: SET TZ=MST7MDT
For Arizona: SET TZ=MST7
For Chicago: SET TZ=CST6CDT
For New York: SET TZ=EST5EDT
For London: SET TZ=GMT0BST
For Amsterdam: SET TZ=MET-1DST
For Moscow: SET TZ=MSK-3MSD
For Aukland: SET TZ=NZT-12DST

Once thats all set, reboot your computer. Now go to a dos prompt
by running "command" in the start - run window. Once here type
pgp -kg. This will start your key generation. Just follow the onscreen
instructions and choose highest encryption. Use your desired NYM account
you will be creating. Its a good idea to send an email to [email protected]
with no subjest or message, the return email will be all accounts active with
NYM.

After you have done this, once Quicksilver is installed, it will
automatically pick up your key if you have configured it as I mentioned
with the C:\PGP dir and the proper AutoExec.Bat settings.

Now go ahead and install the windows version of PGP, watch out for the addon
that can lock out your network card. I guess its a good security addon, but
it will completely lock you from the internet if you run it. Can be confusing.
Reboot again and get ready to run Quicksilver to create your NYM.

Install Quicksilver

Just run the installer and follow the instructions. You will have to put the
email that you plan to use for your NYM (not the NYM email, but the email you
will use to recieve the NYM emails). Be sure to not screw that up. Once all set,
just run through the update wizard and install the addons as described before.

Once you have everything installed, you need to click on "tools" then follow
the dropdown to "remailers" and click. You need to then run "Update" so Quicksilver
can download all of the keys it needs for remailers. Be sure to check all boxes on
"mixmaster" and "cypherpunk" to get all keys.

Restart Quicksilver and get ready to start your NYM creation.

Creating NYM Account

Open up Quicksilver and click on the sunglasses icon to launch the NYM wizard.
Just follow the instructions as you go. You will need to configure your reply
blocks. This is the remailer chain that your mail is sent to you through. You
can read the help files in Quicksilver to understand this. Here is a sample with
just one remailer using "cracker" as remailer.

Reply-Block:
Anon-To: cracker
Latent-Time: +0:00
Encrypt-Key: anypassword
cracker
Anon-To: [email protected]
Latent-Time: +0:00
Encrypt-Key: anypassword
[email protected]

You must use a remailer thats in the list that Quicksilver downloaded or it
will not have the key. You also may want to go and check which remailers are
working better at the time. Here is a stat page for remailers.
http://anon.efga.org/Remailers/TypeIList

[email protected] is the actual email where you are recieving your NYM emails.
You can use an anonymous online email or anything you wish. Important: You
must use the email that you first entered in Quicksilver setup or it will not
recognize it in the reply block.

Once all is set, just tell it to send and choose . Quicksilver
will automate the rest and ask you for your PGP key password. Give it some
time and let it do its work. When its done it will tell you if the send was
successful or not.

Now you will need to wait a couple hours, this can take awhile. You will
eventually recieve an encrypted email from NYM. If you installed the windows
PGP, you can use this to decrypt the message. Remember that you will have to
decrypt however many times per remailer and use the proper password for the
remailer.

Once decrypted, you will see a message that gives an address to reply to that
will activate your account. You can use any email for this and any message. As
long as the address NYM gives is replied to, the account is activated. You will
then recieve another email very promptly that will say your account is active.

Everything you get will be encrypted to you by the remailers and by NYM, so
remember to dycrypt in the order going backwards in your remailer chain. If you
use just one remailer, it makes it very easy, but its a little less secure. Its
up to you how much you want to use. Personally I think one is fine as long as you
are not a government spy or something, hehe.

Using Your NYM Account
-----------------------

Sending Email & Newsgroup Messages

Sending Email

First you will need NYM's public keys for this to work. Somehow this usually
pops up in my windows PGP automatically once I have created my NYM and then
de-crypted the replies I get from NYM in OUTLOOK. I think it asks to be imported
when done like that. If for some reason you dont have it in your windows PGP
keys, you can import it by emailing [email protected] then you will get
the key. Copy it to clipboard and use the windows PGP to import.

I like to use OUTLOOK EXPRESS and the PGP for Windows configures itself to
OUTLOOK to make it very handy for NYM use. You must use a template to send
email. Below is an example.

Cut Line -------------------------------------------- Do Not Cut This Line

From: Alien <----- your NYM account (remove these notes)
To: [email protected] <----- whom you are emailing
Subject: ignore this nym test <----- any subject you want

Your message goes here.
You can encrypt this message to the person if they
have pgp or just write your message. I would do that
in a seperate window and use clipboard to encrypt, cut
and paste to here.

Cut Line -------------------------------------------- Do Not Cut This Line

Open up a new message in your email client.
Copy the text between the cut lines and put in the message body. Then edit
accordingly, you must encrypt and sign this whole thing to NYM
(see below about OUTLOOK) by using their key that should be in your windows
PGP keys. If its not there, import it by copy and paste.

OUTLOOK EXPRESS

If you are using OUTLOOK, you will need to open fully the new message window,
then you will see the PGP tools in the tool bar at the top. You will need to
depress Encrypt and the Sign buttons. They will stay pressed until your send is
done. Sometimes in OUTLOOK, there will be 4 buttons, I always use the last 2 that
are on the far right.

However you are doing it, the message in the template above gets edited to whom
you are sending, etc. Then you encrypt and sign it to NYM, then you send it to
[email protected] with no subject line.

Newsgroup Posting

This is very similar to the above instructions except you will be using a
different template and sending the final product to the [email protected]

Cut Line -------------------------------------------- Do Not Cut This Line

From: yournym
To: (desired mail2news gateway, see below)
References: (delete this line if not responding to a thread)
Newsgroups: alt.whatever.newsgroup
Subject: Any Subject or Re: then subject if replying to

Your message goes here

Cut Line -------------------------------------------- Do Not Cut This Line

When using references, you just copy and paste this from the newspost header where it
says "references". If using OUTLOOK you just go to properties of the message and then
details. If there is no references then use the message ID.

The "To:" line is where you put the newgroup gateway you will be sending through.
Below are some good gateways for mailing newgroup postings.

[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]

Your message is prepared by editing appropriately, then you encrypt and sign to NYM,
then send to [email protected].

Quicksilver Notes:

There are many things you can do with this program. I only use it to
create my NYM and then from there I just use the windows PGP and
OUTLOOK EXPRESS using a simple template. Play with QS and you may find
more uses for it that you prefer.

Any comments, ideas, etc. just email me at [email protected]

OUTLOOK Notes:

I have had some problems when I try and send, encrypt, and sign at the same time.
Sometimes it will say it cannot find the NYM key. All I do is click "OK", then "cancel"
when it tries to search the domain servers, then I get a window that allows me to drag
the key to the "recipient" area. I may have this screwed up in how I installed windows
PGP.

Final Note:

There are so many ways to do all of what i just detailed out, this is one way I found
that worked best for me. I hope you can get some use from these instructions. Have fun
and always keep a smart head in this hobby of ours.

Has pretty much step by step with pictures and all:

Downloading and installing PGP
Creating your own PGP keys
Giving your PGP key to others
Importing New PGP keys
Encrypting a text message to send
Decrypting a PGP message
PGP Encrypting a file
Decrypting a PGP file

OK-

I've read all the links and now I'm informed just enough
to be paranoid... this all seems to be about email
security, but my emailing doesn't really concern me
much. My web browsing / posting / etc. is really my main
concern.

Is there an easy way to make my broadband connection "safe"
from curious porkers?

I have a firewall installed on my computer, but as I said
before, I know just enough about computers to know
that I don't really know jack schitt.
WTF? What's a guy to do? Will all this PGPi stuff
protect my browsing as well as email? I read many FAQ's
from the previous posts, and I've boned up on a lot of the
security archives, but really all it ever does is
scare me into not posting pictures.

On another note - should I purchase "window washer" or some other
similar utility? I dump my temp files and stuff on
a regular basis, but we know those files are easily retrieved
unless they're "bleached?" a few times...

I didn't worry so much back when I had dialup, as the
ISP changes (or something like that) every time one
dials in, but with broadband, my computer and my
surfing has legs widespread akimbo to anyone with
more knowledge than I on these matters (or so it seems to me)
for easy penetration and infection . . :-(
and most computer savvy folks are better prepared than I.

Thoughts appreciated,

Soliver

Soliver: The main conversation here is email security. The only way to partially secure your browsing is to use a service such as http://www.anonymizer.com or something.

Any site you visit logs your IP, which is basically a "house address" for your computer. These services hide that. You go to their site and in turn their site will feed you the real site you requested. So the sites you go to will see the IP of the service you're using, not yours. Make sense?

You may also hear these called "proxy" services. A general search on yahoo.com will pull up several things.

Now, as far as deleting your temp files... Don't bother, it's a waste of time. The FBI has programs that will pull all the deleted information off your drive... so if you're shit it confiscated or something they'll be able to get to it, deleted or no.

The only way to get rid of stuff permanently is to overwrite it. Example:
You have a drive that has 20 slots... 0-19 lets say. Something is written to your drive in slots 0-4, you delete it, but your drive is still writing but it's writing to slots 5-19 lets say. That information, in 0-4, is still obtainable until it's overwritten with something else.

I know that's a very simplistic example but I hope you see the point. What some of these programs do is when you delete something it will not only delete it, but it will overwrite that area with random 0's and 1's. Some of these programs will do this up to 7 or more times to make sure that data is gone.

I donít know what the extent of the forensic data recovery can be, but that should stop just about anyone from obtaining that information.

It all comes down the amount of paranoia you have. You can get an app that boots the system. If the system is turned on without that boot disk it will erase the drive as described above and burn the drive. The only thing is that you'd have to give it time to complete this. If someone, a forensic cop for instance, thought that might be a possibility then they'd just pull the power and recover what's left anyway.

So to put it all together in perspective... Deleting shit is pointless unless that space is overwritten. There are programs that do this. Your surfing habits can be somewhat cloaked by using free or paid proxies. Email can be secured by using PGP or similar technology, or by using paid secure email services... a la ziplip.com or hushmail.com

Any other questions?

next friday we'll be debuting
a new forum here devoted to subjects like this,
it'll be called Resist & Rebel and it's primary focus will be the political situation as it affects our lives and how we can stay free while we enjoy liberty's fruits.
our dear friend Sweetness will be taking the lead in the new forum as mod
and we'll be rounding up & transfering over the many threads here that address the war on drugs,
privacy, stealth, politics, activism, resistance and revolution.
stay tuned!

Sweetness suggested the idea,
and we've been kicking the idea around a few days
now.
we do get quite a few threads on related topics and it'd be nice to pull them together in a forum.
also this fostering of resistance and revolution is directly in line with our mission statement here.
should prove interesting and informative.
