I've attempted growing outdoors multiple times in multiple styles, using multiple strains in varying amounts of shade...I've simply come to realize that the desert I live in is too dry.

Absolutely the desert has it's own species of life capable of surviving. You WILL have to provide a protected environment there. Bag's , TiT's, and green houses dug down into the earth with irrigation and humidification are absolutely necessary IMHO
