Hey guys,

Any electrically savvy topiates here want to lend me a hand/give me some advise?

I picked up an old 150w Hps security light from a buddy (for free! Lol) it has all the guts and everything I should need to wire it up as a grow light...

I found this thread where someone did exactly what I plan to do but I would like to hear your opinions and if possible maybe walk me through the procedure to make sure I'm being safe and don't zap the shit out of myself lol

**mods if this link is not allowed I apologize and please feel free to remove it... I think it's allowed... I'm not trying to post any non-allowed links... just found it relevant... thanks :)**

http://www.rollitup....row-light.8499/

I have a basic understanding of electricity and lighting but I would be very happy if anyone would like to help me out a bit... I can post pictures of what I have and we can build it together...

So... what do you guys think? Lol

Piece of cake Ethno :)

What voltage is the ballast rated to run with (note that some ballasts are 'multi tap', and can run with different input voltages)

Is it still all in the yard light fixture, or has it been gutted already?

It might be easier to talk you through if you posted some pics.

I have more Hids than I should say most are commercial bought  sunlight systems, here are 3 I wired myself. 2, 400 watt and 1, 1000 watt.

I am willing to offer any help I can. I believe you can do it , after all I did. I can show more pics if needed.

I have use 70 watt HPS decades ago to restart after getting free of the correctional system.

Lets start , please I hope other will join us.

I do love a project.  entho if you lived closer I would give you a 400 watt. I have given several away.

Edit - forgot to post these pics.

I want to get a nice project box tomorrow to put all the components into... so for now apart from making sure i know how to wire it... and maybe doing a test... I don't think I can do much more. Tomorrow I will get a project box and wire everything up good... I also have a cool idea for a reflector courtesy of a youtube video lol

Thanks for the help guys! you two are awesome :)

Be sure to label wires before taking apart. Looks like it new.

I have everything wired up according to the diagram in the thread I linked above....

I am going to turn it on for a quick test... pray for me lol

EDIT: fired up perfectly!! Not a problem was had... except maybe that I looked at the bulb for too long lol

"Blinded by the light..."

I took a picture of tonight's test and I'll post some more tomorrow when I have things set up better! I'll do a little more explaining of how i will put everything together... including reflector.

Thanks for your help and reassurance guys!

You made me remember I have a 150 HPS I rewired and used in a cool tube

- ( a kool tube blows air through the tube around the light allowing it to be closer and prevent high heat in grow boxes - for those who never heard of them )

I use a large glass chimney cost $5 , hook a fan on 1 end and a duct to the other end  and cool

I haven't used this in a very long time its a bit dusty.

EDit - I looked and its a 175 metal halide not 150 HPS.

Nice work Ethno. Way to hang in there and "know what you know" without resorting to panic.

If you ever get lost in the future here is a link to huge a database of technical downloads for all types of HID ballasts.

Thanks all!! :) this place is amazing and is full of amazing people <3

I have another question... what should I put my ballast in? I can't seem to find an electrical box the right size....

Does it need to be enclosed?

What should I use? Lol

Thanks again guys :)

The ballast doesn't need to be enclosed. I've set them on a brick before, it's going to get hot.

I too have used some old fire brick from a wood stove as a base for a ballast.  Make sure that it can get good air circulation, cuz they do get hot.

Perfect! Thanks guys!

I'll keep the ballast in a safe, dry place and have a fan blowing on it....

How hot are the ballasts supposed to get? I ran mine for a little more than an hour today and I read it at (I think) 100-120 degrees Fahrenheit... is that normal?

With a fan blowing on it it would obviously be less.

That's probably normal temp. I never measured the temp but I have used a fan to blow off the heat.  I have heard they will last longer if the get air to prevent heat build up. I believe a ballast will last 15 years maybe more.

Could you touch the ballast without burning yourself? I'm just wondering how hot they can get before it's a problem...

EDIT: From all the specs I'm getting from different 150w hps ballasts on the web it seems max temp is 221 degrees.
