How did I miss this thread?

Those are some very nice cakes, shoomer. You are doing one hell of a job on this grow.

And some very valuable info and awesome pics from Faht. Was it you, Faht who also came up with the drinking straw tek for watering cakes back when? I can't remember, but I tried that once years ago and had some very nice results, but I never used more than that one time as I have never really been a cake grower per se. As Jammer said, it's good to have you back around these parts to help us all.

Anyway, keep up the good work, shoomer. And good vibes!

Thanks, PF! No it was not me, but I do remember that picture vividly... hippie chick maybe? That seems vaguely familiar. I did come up (well at least made it public) the roll part of the dunk and roll though... totally out of laziness too. Got tired of wiping off my cakes after a dunk so I just threw them in dry verm and I guess it worked out well Lol.

The straw tek and inner rez was around well before I was.

I didn't know you came up with the roll part. Man, you have really contributed a lot to the OMC over the years.

Yeah, Faht is the father of rolling cakes.

We're all a bunch of old farts nowadays, lol.

<snip>

There's lots going on @ 'topia and many people in need of guidance and encouragement so I am sure you were well occupied with that objective in mind as it's hard to catch everything.

But you are here now and I thank you for the kind words and thoughts!

Yeah, Faht is the father of rolling cakes.

We're all a bunch of old farts nowadays, lol.

We're (well at least you guys) are not old, but only well experienced!

But I, being the recipient of such kind words and worthy experience, will try to repay the only way I know how:

Mycoporn!

First off we have the state of the state visa-vis the current grow.

top-031817.jpg

Each cake seem to be doing its level best to be individualistic and stand out amongst its neighbors by fruiting asyncronitically.

The pic is a little off center, but then, so am I.

The next are 2 cakes that were segregated because I mistook drying mycelium turning blue as getting trich'd up.

Here are the isolation bays:

lidded.jpg

.....and here's what they are doing now:

opened.jpg

So it seem the mini-FC concept is working for them.

It seems the myc has migrated MUCH more into the verm than my previous run (years ago) did.

The only thing I changed was instead of beating up my coffee grinder grinding whole brown rice, I found a brown rice wheat flour substitute at the HFS (health food store) that was ground up quite fine.

I wonder if that means that I "overfed" the cakes and that's why they're doing the agressive thing.

Last is my investment in either straw logs (w/ poo this time) or trying out the cased container grow:

rye_run.jpg

This one will take some explaining.

Jar 1 was done when I set down to do them all, but ran out of everclear for my lamp after my 1st 'noc.

Jars 2-5 and B1-4 were done a couple of days later after I re-upped on alc.

Jars 2 and 5 didn't seem to catch quickly and were seeming to stall (perhaps a tad too dry) so yest. I re-'nocced them each w/ 20cc of the LC they started with.

Yes, that's me lurking behind the bright star of blue/white light.

The BRF's look muddy because they ARE muddy. They get PC'd with everything else for 1.5 hr. @15PSI (every BRF in this thread has been done that way) but I think it's a side effect of the  BRF being so finely ground.

Now Faht may be the father of Duncan Rohl, but it's never worked that well for me on the cake sides (the proof above) so I was pondering what might work better for me (especially since this myc seems so aggressive).

The concept is this:

If I take a consolidated cake (enough it has shrunk from the side of the jar, but not pinning yet) and birth that into a container that is 1" wider than the cake and 1.5" taller with the bottom layered w/ verm ~1/2 - 34" thick and while keeping the cake centered surround the cake and fill the container to the top with verm, place a CD on top holding everything in, fill w/ water through the CD hole, put it in the fridge w/ a weight on top, after 12-24hr. take it out, remove the weight while holding the CD tight to the container quickly invert the entire thing w/ CD on the bottom, and place it on a rack in the sink to drain for a few hours to combine the dunk and roll into a single stage and benefit from more verm sticking to the sides better since the verm will be like wet sand formed in a bucket at the beach by children to create ephemeral castles.

Just a thought and something to try w/ those BRF's up top.

Many thanks to all for the kind words and good suggestions!

Bad news is that there's not much to see (although harvest continues apace) and I'm just not feeling clicky after 10 grain jars, 7 BRF, 2 LC's propagated, and 4 new started.

News on the "castle cake"  will have to wait as well since the present BRF's are ~1/2 colonized  and still about 2 weeks out. The good news is they are all different sizes (1pt.,1/2pt.,1/4pt.) and so should be a good test run IF I can find complimentary containers for the cake/verm combo.

I'd try it w/ the present run but I think after 1 fruiting they just won't have the resources left to colonize that much verm.

I post pics tomorrow as it seems some activity is stirring in the corner.

Whew! life got bust there for a sec.

It IS technically tomorrow, though from the post date.

Still coming in dribs and drabs, but still coming!

Had to spend time reaping green when the 1st amber appeared and it pretty much ate yesterday (and cleaning the utensils afterwards made it a worthy expenditure of time).

Well thank you! It was a nice flush from that one.

It seems now to be bigger is better as you can see here:

big_boomers.jpg

I stopped misting as many (from that same posted cake from Arathu) developed many a slimy blackhead from all those little pups and I thought maybe they were getting a little too wet from the misting and stopped.

Whether misting does it or just a part of 2nd flush, the ones coming in now are getting big enough to topple cakes.

The rye jars are doing OK but I'll have a couple bacillus failures from going a little too wet w/ the 20cc LC 'noc.

The verm castle cake is still @ least 2 wks.away as the BRF are @ about 60%.

The LC's I did last run are almost across the board have yet to show anything ropey (1 out of 7....and that one's just a LC propagation) and thought that I'd screwed up the Karo recipe until I just saw that 1st one today.

The rye jars started kicking today as the temp got to a point that I couldn't help but open windows and it seems to have booted the rye in the ass as I can see growth in any that have a chance, just spread FAST.

Does anyone do fanning of 'nocced filtered jars to help FAE while colonizing the grains?

Damn, I like everything about this thread.  You are really doing nice things with those cakes, man.

They look like little alien saucers on those old CDs--very cool.

The little saucers and visitors thereof brought forth to me this day the following:

top_032617.JPG

I love how this hobby goes from zero to hero in just hours!

As long as it keeps going, I'll keep abusing your sensibilities w/ gratuitous pics portraying bountiful goodness of a mycological nature.

So there.

Thank you all for the encouragement!

Shoot, thanks for the inspirational cake porn, man.  You have a knack for the hobby; it is not something one can teach--you either have it, or you don't.

Speaking of UFOs, and this is off-topic, this was a fascinating documentary:

[Direct Link]

I watched it on Netflix, and it's as much about this dude's quirky character as it is about the UFO phenomenon.

Yesterdays visitors had to be....ummmmmmmm....harvested.

But not before this was taken to explain why:

top_032717.jpg

They was dropping spores and everything so I had to pluck 'em.

Found out that the hefty 4" fan I have for the exhaust on my server makes a nice, slightly warm continual dry air flow that is perfect for mummification so that's where they rest now.

MLBjammer : I'm just lucky this time. My latest run of LC bottles (used Karo-esque w/ rye kernels  instead of ME this time for clearer LC) looks to be a 5-6 out of 7 failure (3 LC prop and 4 new varieties MS syringe, 2 untouched w/ still no activity after 5 days) and I've lost 2 rye quarts so far.

It's just (re)beginners luck.

We all have our failures here and there.  It takes a little while to get down your grain technique--just keep at it.  As for LCs, I would focus on agar instead.  But that is just my opinion.

The EBEs are looking quite lovely, though.

Shroom.......spores is what they do! It's incredible how many they make  Wild reishi makes so many that a brown spore mud hides the fruits sometimes.

I never had much luck with LC's.......one time I had a B+ LC that whooped ass so I'm sure it's me............but agar and then wedges to sterilized WBS was the deal.

Now I got 50lbs of whole oats to try (yeah I got more WBS too)..............

AND I am getting a BIG HEPA ASAP ................
