Find a local general shop-mall or any shop that sells wild bird seeds in bulk (12-12.5kg) for me that costs £6.

I bet you can get cheaper than that, here is a better "premium" example, bird safe is good.

The mixed seed will also add variation in composition and ratios of nutrients.

Good tip! I'm working with 20kg WBS bags now, which cost me around €20. When I have the time, I'll visit a local cattle feed seller. They sell by the barrel so I'm guessing it'll be a lot cheaper.

Interesting and cheap! I'll compare them to the price for rye when I'm in the store.

Whatever works, price you like, and is "animal" safe, can be horse, bird, rabbit etc.

Else "organic" which is the human safe version (more pricey, washed etc).

I'm just anti pesticide on edible grains or bird feed or human feed. That's all.

Ah ok! I'm with you there but buying my grains organic has a price ticket that I'm not willing to pay

Check out the price of niger seeds $$$

I'm a convert from popcorn and wheat berries to these oats. Seriously easy and cheep. The grain prep the MLB describes showed me my spawn was WAY TOO WET!

Too dry > too wet invariably in this hobby, IMHO

They have the same benefits of popcorn (large grain size, homogeneous, etc) without all that extra starch turning it to goo if improperly hydrated.

Ten of the twelve jars are showing signs of growth. It's been three days since innoculation so I'm quite happy!

I've done some testing with different "naked" grains, and the outcome is seeds with shells-hulls. 28-33% of naked grain nutrients are in the 1mm thick layer of bran.

Seeds also have a higher ratio of rich cellulose (shells), cottonseed-soya hulls are a common amendment to oyster substrates (increases total yield).

Due the the variation in composition, both carbon and macro-micro nutrients, the mycelium will pretty much eat anything.

The down side is availability, they take much longer to hydrate, high in starch (not open air safe).

Day 4 update:

All jars are showing nice growth. I was wondering how much % colonized you guys would say these jars are? I would say (L->R) 10%, 5%, 5%.

Indeed I would keep doing exactly what you're doing...those look great!

Your estimates of percentages are pretty close so steady as she goes.......
