Here's a clock for Skywatcher.

atmos-566.jpg

Reinvented by Australian designer Marc Newson, its balanced and simple design is as unexpected as it is obvious, resulting in a level of sobriety that borders on minimalist. Its Baccarat crystal case houses a new movement, the Jaeger-LeCoultre 566 Calibre, which in addition to indicating the hours and minutes, also displays the month, equation of time and a splendid view of the night sky as viewed from the Northern Hemisphere. It also includes an indication of the cardinal points and astrological signs. Two limited editions will be available: a series of 48 in Baccarat crystal, and another of just 28 in blue Baccarat crystal.

The Atmos 566 Clock will be available in a limited number of 76 clocks, and as well as telling the time it features a built in sky map.

How much is this cool clock going to cost you? Somewhere between $2,600 to $70,600 depending on the specifications.

Here is the American submarine that changed everything.  The Albacore, AGSS-569.   While I was on my diesel electric submarine, this was the fastest submarine out there, faster than the nukes, running submerged on the fast discharge rate on the battery.  I don't know how fast it went, but published, 33 knots, submerged.   We could do about 17, surfaced.

Worst submarine movie I ever saw: U-571

U-571: You give historical films a bad name

I paid good money to watch this stinker in a theater.  When it ended and the end credits started, I was first to stand up in the theater and loudly proclaimed: "Someone should tell these people about technical advisers."   From a submareener's point of view, just about everything was wrong.  In the movie, a few American men go on board a German submarine, while in battle, with a German ship bearing down on them, into a sub which they have no clue of the technical layout (which is why when a qualified sub sailor goes into a new boat, he must requalify, as so much changes from boat to boat, within the same navy), with all the operating labels in German, and they immediately man this boat while holding the crew captive.   It was laughable at best.  Good enough for ignorant popcorn burners, maybe, but such total bullshit.

If you read the link, you have seen our British allies were none too impressed with this US nationalist revisionist history.

Worst Submarine Movie, Ever!

The USS Salmon, SS-573...  Here's a weird story I heard while I was in Submarine Flotilla 1 about the Salmon, the flotilla's flagship.  The story was this, Salmon was running deeply submerged down the PNW Coast when she, with ballasts full of seawater, entered a deep stream of fresh water outside the mouth of the Columbia River, a river so famous for its salmon.  Because the seawater was so much heavier than the fresh water stream they were passing through, she became relatively heavy and suddenly went down like a rock, and created an emergency situation to save the boat from its loss of depth control.   Could be bullshit, it's just a story I heard.   But one thing I learned repeatedly in two years in a sub, shit happens.

Here's my boat, the Voladore, tied up inboard, with the Redfish, the Salmon, and the Rock, outboard.

The Grayback was indeed a strange looking boat.

The missile took off from the Banghyon airfield in the northwestern town of Kusong and flew 578 miles before landing in the sea between North Korea and Japan, the South Korean military said in a statement. Military officials were still analyzing flight data to determine what type of missile had been used.
