Hi,

I'm new to this and doing some research. The oats sound great, is there ever a reason why you would choose a different grain, I'm wondering why they are not a standard go to if they save so many steps?

Thanks

Much of it has to with price and availability, which often depends on where you live.

Then, there is just plain personal preferences.

Rather than write, here is a good thread on the subject: https://mycotopia.ne...cium-carbonate/

It looks like they are only referring to bulk substrate, I'm familiar with using gypsum with bulk subs, just not with grains...

The cool thing about oats is how many steps you can remove from the process.

You literally put oats in a jar, pour in water that you previously dissolved some gypsum in, cover with tyvek, tinfoil and PC.

Shake it baby, all you can tonight... Let cool, innoculate.

Done.

No rinsing, soaking, drying, blah... Hours saved.

Would you mind linking a thread with an oat Tek similar to what you mentioned? If not no worries I'm sure I'll find some teks with minimal digging ^-^

Sure! Now you may have to dig into these threads a bit. MLBJammer is an "Oat Miestro" so search out his stuff.

"No prep" is basically 1.5c grain to 1c water, just put in jars PC and then shake when cool. @kcmox had this to add to no prep:

https://mycotopia.ne...typo/?p=1287430

Here's microbe's oat tek, I'm sure one can use rye too:

https://mycotopia.ne...s-oat-prep-tek/

Cue's wbs steep:

https://mycotopia.ne...-wbs-steep-tek/

Here's how cats and/or bats do the whole cubensis bulk thing:

https://mycotopia.ne...bulk/?p=1281212

I use oats, but I steep. There's "no-prep" there too.

I just realized I grabbed rolled oats instead of whole oats from the store, I'm assuming I won't be able to use rolled oats because it will become soggy like oatmeal when I add water???

This is the first grain jar (s) for the A+ Albino isolate. Growth looks even and steady and very healthy!
It's about 4 days in. 09db2b1e3645fae338a358380f2310b2.jpg
