Greetings all!

First post, long time lurker. An online aquantance of mine sent me these pictures of his first successful grow. Hopefully they will bring back memories for all you veterans of when you saw you're first pins on pf cakes. These are South American strain of P. cubensis on pf tek cakes (anno's pf cakes for simple minds). In a plain tub with perlite, fanned 2+ times a day. Jars were innoculated on 7/19, birthed the first week of August. Pins showed on 8/13, these are current pictures.

Hell's yes. My friend lives in a country that has sane drug laws and he can actually cultivate these little guys. I however must be satisfied to learn and read with facination. Might try some edibles soon though. Here is a macro. Those little white dots are what got my mouth watering when he sent me pics before pins started showing. You know you are close when your cakes get goose bumps. Cosmic shiver anyone? Hyphae knots I think I have heard them called.

Now... easiest way for a complete beginner to clone the substrain thats pumping out such a nice pinset? He doesn't have a flowhood and building a bulky glovebox will not work with his ultra-stealth grow. He has very uptight flatmates. He does have one of those little hepa-type air purifiers like the ones made by holmes and are designed for rooms around 10x10. I am pretty sure this won't work, but he is forever the optimist.

Here is my friend's other tub. Was started as a monotub, but due to a suspected lack of gas exchange based on its location (it gets next to zero air current around the tub) it now gets fanned once a day. This is the brazilian strain. This time it was DEC'd. These were innoculated the same time as the SA's, but got to the FC a week later so I'm guessing another few days before he starts seeing pins. One of the cakes was starting to get a few of those goosebumps, maybe another strong pinning like cake #1 from the SA's.

Anyhow, pics:

Innoculated 7/19/2006, pins first witnessed 8/13/2006.

He keeps filling up my email inbox with photos.

DaGoon: Can you find his grow in picture #1? Maybe first who finds it wins a print from the best cake?

Today's pictures, might be more if tonight there is lots of growth from those bigger shrooms. They seems to really take off past 1" long.

edit: notice the little bumps next to the pin in the last picture, cosmic goosebumps man! My friend reports feeling giddy just being in the presence of this mushroom

Soft solid. After hours. Yep, mix of coralife and currentusa fixtures all running the currentusa SunPac cf lights which are half 10000K half 6700K. When he had a reef tank it was 50/50's.

nice work myco. Solid cakes :)

Looks like a couple will be ready very soon, i personally like to pick em when they look pretty much like the big one in the second pic.....or just a touch or so thereafter (i personally dont like to even see the veil tear).....keeps em nice and solid, as well as pretty when dried :D

again nice work

When I IM'd him that python he pulled the cake out and snapped some pics. He said he will most likely wait until morning to harvest, giving that cake another 8 hours or so. 2 shrooms have partially torn veils, but he has a few that are stil only about a day since pinning so we want to give them a chance to put on some weight as it is my understanding that you have to pull a complete flush off at one time. Anyhow, check em:
