I've recently got into trying more mid to top shelf bourbons and ryes lately.

 

I've become a huge fan of Buffalo Trace & Eagle Rare (basically BT aged 10years). Both delicious bourbons.

 

My for to rye is Rittenhouse. Can't beat it for $25 or less.

 

I'm relatively new at good whiskey, so I'd love suggestions on other brands to try.

Booker's

Breckenridge Bourbon - is unusually good for an 80 proof bourbon. 

 

Wild Turkey 101 - is the best possible retail bourbon for price and taste. If you can't afford the $$$ for a daily sip. 

 

I no longer drink but I can share the distillation of my experience.

For whatever reason a lot of stores here have a hell of a time keeping and Buffalo Trace products in stock. the regular BT stuff has to be one of the best bourbons you'll find at that price range. ($ 25ish)

 

I'm in the finals in a football pool and if I win, I'm getting a bunch of Buffalo Trace stuff!! Stagg Jr, Blanton's, & Rock Hill Farms to name a few.

 

I have a half of a bottle of Eagle Rare left. It's like a slightly refined BT. Really all it is is BT aged a few more years. Good stuff at around $ 30.

The top shelf Bourbons, IMHO as a consumer who has tried them all (except for "Pappies"), are pretty much all very similar to me except for price and hype.

 

But take my word for it, price and hype do not  always equate to "delicious" Bourbon.

Several months ago I decided to try really cheap, "bottom shelf" Bourbons.

Most were pretty bad, but I stumbled upon a really cheap (less than $10 bucks) brand of Bourbon that was so good that it has become my preferred brand. 

It was only 3 months ago that I read the small print on the label.

Imagine my surprise when I learned that it was made by Buffalo Trace!

If my favorite liquor store happens to be out of this particular brand, I will go to another liquor store to buy it. Not because of the very affordable price, but because it is an excellent Bourbon.  

I urge you Bourbon lovers to try it.

Oh, before I forget, the brand name of that never advertised Bourbon?

 Lowly old "Benchmark".

I always mix mine with Cola or Cherry Cola.

Try it... you'll like it!

I happened to be out with a buddy for his birthday Friday night . We were at the Knickerbocker in New Holland Brewery & Distillery. We each had a shot of their Beer Barrel Bourbon. Which finishes aging in their Dragon's Milk Stout barrels. It was very different in a really nice way. It actually went very well with a chaser of their Bourbon Barrel Stout. New Holland breaks the rules when it comes to distilling with a lot of their stuff. But I never tasted a bourbon like their Beer Barrel Bourbon. Very unique! At $30 a fifth, it's very well worth it. New Holland Artisan Spirits also makes Beer Barrel Rye the same way. I haven't tried that yet though. "http://newhollandbre...arrel-bourbon/"

I found a local grocery store that sells Buffalo Trace in those little 50ml airplane bottles for $1 a piece! It's a steal because for $15 I get a whole fifth of Buffalo Trace. Which is almost half the price. Buffalo Trace costs about $28 for a 750 ml fifth otherwise. It tastes just as good as their regular glass bottles, and it's easy to stash these in your tackle box, or ice fishing bucket. Hell! I stash them all over the house, and find bottles I didn't even know I had! lol!

I've tried Buffalo Traces Benchmark, and for the price it's not bad at all. But I'm spoiled on the regular Buffalo Trace. I get some horrible headaches from Benchmark. It's a little rougher than the regular BT too. Buffalo Trace is the longest running distillery in the country, and they produce a whole range of bourbons. From Benchmark all the way up to Blanton's single barrel.

Larceny bourbon is the shit if you can find it. Buffalo trace is good, bulleit (sp?) Is good, turkey 101 is my own little slice of happiness, but larceny is about the cost of jim beam and drinks like a friggin 80 dollar bottle of whisky. Seriously, try it if you can find it.
