Hey folks!  For the last month or so, I've been on the boards a little bit but mostly what I've been doing with my computer time is this:

Magic For The Masses

It's an up-to-date, all-in-one primer for new growers.  It includes a complete PF-tek writeup as well as very basic teks for drying, storage, dosing, recipes, printing, spore water, and cloning.

NOTE: This guide recommends spraying 10% bleach solution into the air and then using isopropyl alcohol for wiping down surfaces.  While I did this for years without any apparent problems, I recently learned that the combination of isopropyl alcohol and bleach yields chloroform, which is harmful to health.  I'm now using a bit of lysol for the air instead of the bleach, though I'm not really a fan of the lysol either.

Hell yeah Sidestreet! Ive been giving people the original PF tek and thinking we needed something more up to date. I was considering writing up a PDF myself. Now I don't feel that need. Thank you for your time and effort.

No problem, I hope that it can help many, many people grow mushrooms.

Natch!  Makes those tubs look nice and full.  Plus you can fit twice as many cakes into a single tub.  I learned it from Fahtster.

Let me know if anything needs to be changed.  I posted it over at that other site and of course they are doing their best to tear it to shreds.  I pretty much expected it, but they might actually help me make it better.

Sorry to hear that man.
I’ll try and sit down and look into it a little more. I have created a lot of training guides and how to’s in my work career. By no means am I the all seeing eye on how to manuals but have created a few that have been criticized when I thought they were gold. Would be interesting to see what the REAL crutisims were else where after reading it closer. Hopefully some good can come from peeps trying to rip it up!

Don't make me register over there and dismantle every single last one of them.

I haven't tried to make PF jars without a PC in years, but when I did I used the tyndallization process.  Over there, the common wisdom is a single 90 min or 2 hour steam.

Tyndallization works.  I know it does because that's how I got started.  But is it true that a 2-hour steam is just as effective?  If so, no biggie, I'll change the guide.  I want it to be good more than I want my ego intact.

Nice work, brother!

I have never personally steamed or fractional sterilized, as I started out with. PC with whole grain.

But...steaming was the process PF described in his original tek. I couldn’t tell you from experience which is better, perhaps include both procedures? Maybe with a disclaimer explaining your experiences and which one you completely trust?

An awesome how to guide for sure. And I wouldn’t worry too much about the other site. They just have different ways of expressing themselves I guess. A completely different culture for sure.

Again, nice work and thank you for putting the work into it.

Ah.  Well, two hours plus cooling time is a lot better than three days plus cooling time!  Personally I wouldn't steam a damn thing any more, but new growers are a lot less likely to have a PC so it needs to go in.

OK, fractional sterilization is out, steaming is in.  I quoted Niemandgeist for the steaming directions.  I attributed to him, of course.  I'm sure I'll come back and update again in my own words, though I think his description is pretty good.

Thanks for all the kind words and help.  I feel like it's a good first version, but it will get better as I come back and refine it.
