Well, along with Bookface, Twitter must be resistible, as I have resisted both since the start.   James Corbett has come to a decision about his participation and offers some analysis on what Twitter is about.

I did open a facebook account 5 years ago because of constant pressure from my partner to do so. I deleted it after one week. I have never had a desire to even look at twitter, and I guess instagram is pointless when you do not carry a phone.

Many consider me a dinosaur, I lived for years surgically attached to a blackberry for work. When i retired, I never wanted to see a phone again. What a different (better IMO) world it would be without cell phone addiction..................

I quit FB after neglecting it for some time.  I did like interacting with my family on it and seeing their photos but...

I still like Instagram.  I'm on there with a fake name, not really posting much but taking in some choice myco people and other positive stuff.

Yeah, I'm still on IG, fake name, no photos with my face, disposable email, etc.. Data mining me would only turn up things I would tell anyone anyway, I like graffiti, rick and morty, goth girls and wait for it... cats.

I've been social media clean for about a year (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), no cable, 'decorative' TV sits on a stand unplugged since we moved into this apt 9 months ago.

The distractions are not missed!

...then i found this place!

The concept of fragmented attention is interesting.

The statement that fragmented attention can permematly reduce your concentration ability is frightening

This old man is a long term addict of all fukin 3!
It's turned into a luv - hate relationship.

I admin 5 groups on fukface and can't imagine detox and abandoning a couple of great causes in a couple of closed groups.

Everything posted in both videos is word!

WTF is an old fart to do?

I can't say at this point that I'll abandon my post anytime soon :(

He's describing the perfect Skinner Box, and used a classic but not-quite-perfect example of one to illustrate his point (the slot machine). It's operant conditioning 101, and just as insulting to the individual as subjecting them to Pavlovian conditioning (which is what the little notification/alert sounds do, causing us to drool for validation or whatever).

And I hope he used your picture in that TED talk (near the beginning) with your permission, Alder!

After being banned for 24 hours I have finally left Facebook. I need Twitter to get points FOR the GLOBAL CITIZEN FESTIVAL. Global citizen.org
Free concerts for sharing the good message and watching videos(muted several screens open to get points) on basic needs. Education, clean water, basic rights. Amazing campaign. Got to see Stevie wonder /Alicia keys / kings of Leon + others and the black keys/Neil Young & someone else I can't remember rn in Central Park for free. Just for watching these videos... Which are informative and for the good of all. They have shows all around the globe.

This seemed like the best place to put this since it wasn't quite deserving of its own thread: https://qz.com/14277...ther-platforms/

A simple acronym sums up what’s wrong with social media

Do you ever scroll through your social media feeds and feel gross? If so, you’re not alone. It’s a common response. And yet we go back, day after day, over and over and over, endlessly scrolling, like addicts hooked on a drug that we once loved but now kind of hate and cannot or will not even try to escape.

Technologist and philosopher Jaron Lanier, a virtual reality pioneer and early internet evangelist who isn’t on Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, contends that you should just quit social media. Go cold turkey. In his latest book, Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now, Lanier argues that engaging on the internet makes us feel bad because systems are designed to manipulate us by measuring our interests, anticipating our desires, modifying our behavior, and creating opportunities for advertisers.

He’s developed a simple acronym to sum up the sinister purpose of tech companies that brought us the platforms we’re hooked on and their effect on us—BUMMER. It stands for Behaviors of Users Modified and Made into Empires for Rent.

The article continues, but the concept of BUMMER is mostly self-explanatory and seems to sum things up perfectly. I hope it's catchy enough to spread.

Good man! I'm contractually obligated to carry a spyPhone or else I'd ditch it altogether. Looking forward to it, really. I hate having a cell phone.

I was on a successful media diet until I discovered MT as well. But MT's a special-enough lady that I don't mind.

Why is operant conditioning as insulting as Pavlovian? Honest question. Don't we depend on operant conditioning to function as individuals and a society?

Unfortunately I think the explanation of BUMMER is too long and the concept behind it might be too large to conveniently unpack. Great acronym though!
