I ended up trying both the dry sift and the water extraction our of curiosity. It was very apparent why the water extraction is more efficient. Even the most diligent dry sift leaves quite a lot of trichomes still attached to plant material.

The problem I ran into with the water extraction however is that water does not like silk screen. I tried just setting my framed screens on top of the bucket and the water rolled right off. So I ended up setting some loose in the bottom but it didn't work all that well so I settled for just straining out all of chunks with a fine metal collander and pouring the water through coffee filters. Initially I let the kief dry on the filters which pretty much cement it in place so I ended up dissolving it off with some isopropyl alcohol which I let evaporate off in a Pyrex dish. Then I scrapped it all up sandwiched it in parment paper and pressed/rolled it out with a wine bottle full of hot water. Got a cute set of little hash balls. I'll post a picture when I get home.

Still have a bag of trim in the freezer that I missed to process. Alas, how I wish I had a nice set of stackable screens.

Don't leave your trim in the freezer too long. Because any more than a couple of hours will cause you to get more contaminants in your finished product. IOW. Don't store dried trim in the freezer. I don't know much about fresh frozen. I've used it, but the product is just ridiculous to handle, and work with.

My tiny hash balls. Biggest one is from the water extraction.

Nice. Something you need to keep in mind about hash though. You get a tolerance very quickly. I like it occasionally as a treat. So blaze that shit up, or it'll turn to mush from mold unless you dried the kief out completely before pressing.

Well my tolerance is very very low at the moment so first order concern is not getting too stoned by accident :P
It was very dry when I pressed it but I'll watch for mold just in case. Thanks for the advice : )

I use a small washing machine, lots of ice and three bags 120 / 73 / 25....no sense working yourself...or i just squish rosin with my press. How much trim are you doing at a time, i try to wait till I have three to five pounds of trim then will gather keif and dry it to make hash, i use a hot plate and my hands to work it.

That initial run I thought I'd used all my trim but I found another paper bag full. Wasn't a huge amount in either case. All I got was this tiny solar system.

Although the biggest planet is actually from a more recent run I just did using that extra bag of trim plus a mason jar full of flower. The bud doesn't seem all that strong when ground and smoked so I decided to convert some of it (maybe all of it) to hash. The main animating force for this time was so I could give some of it as a gift. I used the ice water method again, I probably should have chopped the flower up better but I was in a bit of a rush. So wasn't the most efficient but I seemed like I got most of the trichomes off when I poked through the spent plant matter.

These are the two main lumps I got (plus the biggest orb in the previous photo). They're extremely sticky, getting them together into balls and off my fingers was a challenge. I'm not sure if that means I ruptured more of the trichomes or there's more oil or still more water than is desirable in them. I fan dried was I got to speed things along so there might still be some water in there.

On the whole the hash making is quite satisfying and the ice water method is for sure faster than sifting but still a bunch of work. I don't really want to invest in a washer or bubble bags nor do I have ready access to cheap high proof alcohol for quick wash : \ Waiting for stuff to settle to the bottom of a bucket works but its a race against the water getting fermenty/sour and uses so many coffee filters.

I didn’t know anything about the others. I googled the blue lagoon and this looks cool... Super intense but cool none the less...

The sweet skunk finished fast when I worked with it. Well suited to you latitude I would imagine.

A lot of those strains bred in BC and throughout Canada are going to have shorter flowering times which is something you need outdoors up there... I’ve worked with the DJ short blueberry but not this is probably BC blueberry or another... like I said there are a lot of variation.

Ain't got no space for indoor ganja this time of year. Nothing but mushrooms until it warms up outside.

The place I got the seeds from specialize in breeding for Northern climates plus they don't charge an arm and a leg for them.

Thanks for the info on the strains though! More than I was able to dig up. I find the various strain lineages difficult to parse.
