A member was asking about using manure water in agar for Copes. I was going to respond to the post, but thought it might be better just to post one for anyone interested.

I never measure anything and just eyeball it when making manure water for agar. But I put something together that I know will work fine.

Pour 500 mL of water (my measuring cup was only 250 so I doubled it) in a pot:

Add approximately 200-250 mL of manure (in my case I use Black Kow) to the water:

Then bring the water/manure mixture to a light simmer for 10 minutes:

Then strain with a fine colander into another receiving vessel:

Now you have manure water for your agar:

If 500 mL is not there after the simmer and strain, just add more water until you get your desired amount for your agar recipe.

Works very well for me anyway.

Excellent write up! I keep stainless mesh tea balls, i think that's what they are called, in my agar tool kit and fill those with manure and or sawdust and will simmer for X amount of time and then i pull them out and keep the water. Some of the manure and or saw dust finds its way through but i have never worried about it and if i do get a little too much i will strain through cheesecloth.

Great information from both of your great intellects. I’ll be posting some observations of my recent micro dose journey. My path is starting to veer towards copes. I have found a mountain of information regarding growing copes, but it doesn’t seem like many members are actively growing them.

I’m reading through your guides for growing copes, and working with agar peace frog. Thank you guys for continuing to compile and supply this amazing information to us growers still crossing those frontiers.

Peace, infinitely grateful as always.

The 500ml jar with cow manure water and agar is not in the pressure cooker :) !!!

The dehydrated cow manure i bought had little twigs and tiny stones, so the manure water is perfect.

I felt like adding a little tiny bit of manure sludge just for good luck ... did i mess it up???

Peacefrog, deep bow of gratitude to you and all the amazing growers ... all 20 plates below with your magic manure recipe!

Tomorrow I'll inoculate the Pans

I'm tempted to use some of the plates with some of my favorite cube spores ... do you reckon they will grow well on these plates???

So is Black Kow still considered good substrate material as well?  I remember some people were growing cubes on it years ago.  Did it pass the test of time?

Cubes are dung-loving species as well, and will grow greatly on those plates.

Honestly I would advise anyone to find a healthier substrate. Against other substrates and against other forms of dung Black Kow always seems to find its way to the bottom. I do believe in another post peace frog stated they use Black Kow for this specific recipe using agar. However I believe they said they use better poo as their actual substrate.

I have never personally tried with cubes before. But Jammer uses it mixed with coir and well...his results are always amazing. I only used it once with Copes in my invitro trials post. They did ok, especially considering how they were grown (1/4 pint cake style):

But the Viva’s hated it:

Yes I only use it for agar water. I have a great friend with a horse farm that lets me come and get as much field composted horse manure as I want. That stuff is awesome IMO. My Copes absolutely love it. And my Viva cultures loved it too:

So I definitely use that for a bulk substrate not the Black Kow. But other people’s mileage may differ from mine.

I´ve already used water I used for pasteurizing woodchips for agar and liquid culture... so I guess if you are pasteurizing dung (well leached), you could use the dungwater the same way... if the ph is right. If not so please correct me. Just a thought. best greetings! outoforder

I have quite a lot of Horse manure as well that has been field leached and shredded! Good to know it will do just as well with copes. Now I just have to get some prints.

Sure that would work just fine.

I just don’t like pasteurizing poo that way these days. It’s a lot more trouble to get your final product to proper field capacity IME.

I used to use the pillow case tek with manure, but now bring my poo based sub to full field capacity, pasteurize in a vessel that is submerged in hot water, measuring the temps of the interior of the sub. After 2-3 hours, it’s done and I am assured of its proper moisture content. No need for squeezing the hell out of it or adding dry verm to soak up excess moisture.

Just my preference really. Either will work fine. And I still use the pillow case tek for straw. Comes out perfect every time IME.

Nice! A waterbath! And for indoor-pasteurization it seems to be really great! So far I always hanged my pillowcases on a tree over night and next day they always were at field capacity. greetings!

Good to know! I have never been so lucky using the pillow case tek with a manure based sub. It allways came out muddy for me, but I never drained it outdoors. Sounds like an old school tek, which I like! Perhaps I will try again using this method.

Thanks for sharing!

Inquiring minds want to know ... do you gents inoculate your agar plates soon after pouring the agar, while it's still warm?

do you let it sit overnight and then place the spores?

curious to know if anyone has a special preference ...

I used Black Kow and commodity brand and they both have the same NPK and i have noticed no difference between the two. I was told by a bagged goods rep that some of the off brand manure comes from the same pile black kow does in some regions.
