Very cool set up Earthling, and what is that interesting coral looking thing in your hand?
If you llke strawberries, a piece of 4 or 6 inch rigid perf drainage pipe can be stood on end and filled with good potting soil with strawberry plants sticking out of each of the holes. Evaporation is minimal so you just need to water it from the top occassiolally. It also works well with a drip arrangement putting that drip pipe down the middle when you first put the soil and strawberry plants in. You get a lot of strawberries growing in a very small space, less than one square foot with dozens of plants. Yum, Yum.
