For me a haiku is trying to capture the essence of a single moment (as impossible as that is). That pure thing that is separate from time but where there is still some perception of awareness. It always reminds me of the way I perceived things when I was a small child. The dust in the sunbeam, a speck of something in the dark corner, white mountain peaks barely visible in the distance. That's just me though. Good thing about a haiku is it can be anything. The only rule, that I know of, is the 5, 7, 5.
