I file the holes on the inside and outside of the hole first. Then I silicone around the hole on the outside before I put the ports in, then inside the port and around the port so I have a nice seal, and my ports do not wear out as fast with them full. Some things I am OCD with. This is one of them. I mean, it only takes a minute more to know they are not going to be an issue.

That’s a great idea. Can’t say I never thought of using sealant, I can’t stand the smell of silicone as I use it EVERYDAY at work unfortunately. I didn’t use a file, I bought 2 black oxide drill bits just for this application. I drilled all my holes, and used a sharp knife to remove any burrs created while drilling. I sized my bit quite a bit smaller than the port, so I have to pretty much smash the port into the hole, and then I use some needle nose pliers to pull them all the way through the hole. After reading your always stellar advice, I’ll grab some silicone and run a bead around my ports from here on out. Anything to prevent any loss due to contamination. Thanks miss ODD, much appreciated. Peace.

You can use rtv also. Just make sure if you use silicone it has a high temp rating.

Yeah, I'd reccomend RTV silicone. It survives more PC cycles than the regular silicone. You can get it at any hardware or auto store.

I've never had any luck with the RTV silicone. It gets brittle and doesn't adhere worth a darn. Plain old clear silicone is far superior for the temps our hobby calls for.

Don't know what to say. Maybe you've gotten unlucky with bad brands. I've experienced the opposite.

I even like it for making SHIPs.

Well, I can totally understand if you used a poor quality Bad Brand. I would definitely suggest doing a few lids like you normally do with the RTV, but with 100% silicone clear. Lol I've had lids that were so old and rusted that they had holes. The 100% silicone was still hanging on. If you stuff that has acrylic, that will leave a bad impression as well. Red RTV will fall off in the dishwasher after a couple PC runs. Its actually designed to be held together in high heat applications as a gasket. To each there own, everyone is entitled to make their own opinions. I wouldn't recommend G2Loctite either as that trended around here a couple of years ago. That stuff is super awesome to apply but literally peels of the insides of the lids after 2 PC runs.

EDIT "Maybe I got unlucky with bad brands" I have considered that and tried several. All inferior compared to standard 100% silicone. I have been trying different stuff for close to 25yrs now.

My thoughts are use what works for you. Shit, maybe it could be something as stupid as difference in water (hard vs soft) we use while PCing as to why we get different results.

I've used regular clear 100% silicone and it fell off easily, too. Sometimes it looked like it melted a bit. Whatever I use, now I scruff up the surface with sandpaper and things stick much better.

To the OP, whatever you decide to use, I think you'll be happy. Those SHIPs are pretty snug even without the extra silicone. This shows you how people can have different results with the same materials, and some things purely come down to preferance.

More progress today. Bright colors in this strain. I’m excited to see how they turn out.
Found some monster Hawaiians coming off the oldest sub I have. It’s still giving, amazed to say the least.
Peace

Biggest run so far. 16 jars, approximately 3cc of spore solution per jar. Really looking forward to this grow.

Good lord.  Prepping for the stoner apocalypse are we?

That's a sweet start - I'm looking forward to warmer weather so I can get some projects moving myself.

It'll be interesting to see how the Burma and B+ duke it out . . .

On the silicone note, I've used RTV and 100% silicone.  I just go regular, clear silicone, as the RTV is wicked expensive in comparison, and between me poking around the oil filter section for suppressor parts and my regular stops for RTV, the Jiffy Boys now look at me sorta funny.

I haven't had any trouble at all with the 100%, but like Deleena, I'm careful to rough up the metal around the hole, and I don't trim or grind off the burrs, as (in my head at least) they help hold the sealant on there.

:)

I do the roughing up and use GE II silicone. I believe its kitchen and bath clear. Give a little smear with that though to make sure all the roughed up bits get a coating of silicone. At least with the metal lids.

First Ecuadorian pick. Nice fruits. I’m pleased with this strain. Very easy to grow, nice pinsets.

Hon, you need to get some corn huskers lotion. It is a slimy mess to put on, but it is a miracle worker. My fingers do the same thing now and then.
