MM, I haven't gotten to the cold pasteurization yet. When I do, I will post it.

I did get my manure based substrate in the mail. LOL, I don't know what I expected, but It was certainly more than a half pint worth of sub in a bag. I could have bought a huge bag of somethin somethin at home depot for the same price. Guess I am going to have to suck it up eh? Put on the big girl panties and clothes pin on my nose. I am going to buy a turkey fryer and run it outside to pasteurize some crap. ~Sigh.

Don't you just love inoculating a bag for spawn, and while enthusiastically/spastically shaking, you blow the clips off of the bag and throw grain all over the room?

Yeah, me neither. Thank the stars I doubled up on the pinks.

A few have tried to convince me that it smells earthy. I have pc'd composted crap before and it smelled like shit. I will never do it in my house again.

Nice! It doesn't look like what I see in mine. The next round of agar already looks promising over here--I'll get it!

Do you have a cool place to fruit those cold-weather species?

I've raised beef, lambs, and pigs(really stink) for market so poo smells like $$ to me! Grass eaters = mild odor. Omnivore = think diapers

Nice spawn bags OD.

I am going to try cold-pasteurization for edibles this weekend. I also want to see if I can get actives growing this way with the addition of *Gulp, lol, dung.  I have been hesitant as of now, but I have been hearing of good success with it and better yields. I am getting some bulk lime and will see how it goes. It will definitely make a huge difference with the heat factor during summer, will keep the smell out of the casa and I will be able to do so much more at a time also if I can figure this out. It's a new challenge for me anyway lol.

lol ODD, dung the the house, lime will take much of that smell away i think, my brothers complain with me having dung bags outside the casa when i forget to put down the bin lids

I don't care what the smell does outdoors. I like the house to smell nice and pretty indoors, and the only time I worked with compost indoors it had me gagging and retching for a few hours and took a long time for the smell to go away. The amount of incense I had to burn was ridiculous lol. As long as it is outside, it can smell like death for all I care lol. Earthy smell is straw cooking to me. Or HWFP. But, I am looking into making a 55 gallon electric steamer to do my bulks in so I only have to do one 15 hour cook every couple or so months.

Have you ever been in heavy commercial mushroom up in PA?

Absolutely the most horrid smell ever. Don't know how people live there. Literally can't drive through with the windows down.

I have a galvanized trough that I think I'm going to end up turning into a steamer next year sometime. Food for thought.

Heating up the galvy wouldn't cause off gassing? I know you shouldn't weld the stuff without a proper respirator, but don't know what temp it becomes unsafe at.

Sorry about this post. Sounded better in my head vs. seeing it in print.
