I'm picking up the 9 piece Pittsburgh set at Harbor Freight tomorrow.  I love Pittsburgh's products because they are lifetime guarantee.

Will let you know brother.

I'm not sure I am 100% following what y'all are doing with these punches...That just seems really odd way to go if you are using this to do agar transfers. They will hold heat forever when you flame sterilize them because of the mass. Is that what y'all are doing with it?

Very fair point, Sandman.  I fully expect they will drill perfectly clean holes in lids to insert rubber stoppers, and I'm hopeful they work for agar transfers.  May flame sterilize once, then ipa for remaining transfers of the same culture?  If no go for agar, then like Edison said, found another way it won't work. bwahaha.

I've had my run in with too massive of an instrument for flaming before. I did a little mild blacksmithing on a spoon to make a super cool custom one piece scalpel. Buuuut turned out that there was just too much mass and after flaming it you can't use if for way too long, so it is unusable.

i am interested in making holes in lids ,heh thought it seemed clear hummm..the spade bits work ok...i  just thought a punch might make a CLEANER HOLE .

I use them for both. Agar and lids. Never had issues with using them on agar. My plates are pristine because I do not do more than one plate transfer at a time. No different than using a scalpel. I use a drill on the plastic lids tho. They shatter with a punch lol.

Very nice sandman very nice ! but a bit pricey just for plastic lids ...heh !

Can i Please borrow yours Sandy ? ....just kidding

i found a 7 piece set of Forstner bits for $12.88 free shipping on Amazon . but i probably would only use the 1/4" and 1/2" bits for lid ........holes for pre-made SHIP  and  15mm and 29mm synthetic filter disks patches . i think i had a bag of syringes filters i  was going to experiment with also

Great call!!!  Forstner bit works like a charm.  Injection port fits tight, but effortless to insert.

I have a hollow punch in the PC for agar later.  The hollow punch didn't even think about grabbing the lid, it just slid all over cutting grooves.  Now that I think about it, my paddle bits may have worked well, but couldn't be better than the Forstner.  So happy!
