...and along those lines perhaps someone could speak to the issue (or non-issue) of the heat involved in many dehydrators. Is any heat problematic?  I've always used DampRid in a small bowl set inside a larger tight-sealing container, with the mushrooms around the perimeter - cracker dry in no time.

There's no issue with heat. Fresh mushrooms with damp rid alone would take days to dry.

Presto. Chango. It's now dry-o.

Get a presto dehydrator. Heating element won't hurt anything.

Here's my favorite dehydrator. Get a few pounds dry in two days

I have a cheap dehydrator, $50 if I remember correctly, 7 trays, I put it on the lowest heat setting and everything's done in a few hours. I have had no drop off in potency. And it looks like it's going to be well use in the next week or two (refer to my B+ thread).

Cool thanks guys,  so I have a few days at least to dry before it gets nasty.  Just make sure its very very dry before storage?  I was thinking about getting a dehydrator for fruit anyway so Ill probably just get one sooner or later.

Dying should start right away. Put a fan on them if nothing else. Cracker dry not only stores but that's what dosages reference. Leathery dry can be easily half as potent by wieght as cracker dry.

Building your own is completely possible,

Simplist design would be a big box, fan heater and some shade net shelves.

I just run a fan and dehumidifier in the room... Throw them in closet with a dehumidifier to speed things up...

Buy some indicating drierite desiccant. It’s $20 for a big jar of it and it turns pink when saturated. Will dry your psillies with a little gentle heat in 16-18 hrs or better. I don’t trust dehydrators but that’s just me.

A lot of us old guys had a hard time accepting dehydrators. We were all taught to avoid heat years ago. It was fan first and damprid finish back in the day. I've still done that when volume exceeds the dehydrator. No matter how I plan, it always seems everything fruits at the same time.

The guy who taught me to grow a long time ago always told me to never use them. I’ve stuck with the drierite in spite of being told it’s ok. Which might be dumb on my part. If they work though , they work. I’m just stuck in my method and can’t see a way out. I’ve heard it doesn’t affect potency but I’ve always been unwilling to risk it. . On a side note , a bunch of my car fell off and nobody likes me.
I lost my toupee and girdle and I cant leave my room.

. . . with a little gentle heat - what do you mean? Dehydrator? Oven?

Dehydrators start in the 100 range. I use an E. Coli incubator set in the 85-90 range when I have small batches. Out side of that I’ll run the rooms temp to 80 and use drierite and a box. I was told long time ago that anything above 95 and you start losing potency. But evidently that was incorrect seeing as people do it a lot now.

This is what I bought. Temp goes as low as 95, and they'll be dry within a day. Comes with 5 trays. I'd reccomend ordering extra and cutting out the centers so you can use them as spacers for the huge mushrooms that wont fit.
