Whew, finally got a huge bag of vermiculite today after soaking the cakes for twelve hours two days ago, just to find out all the stores around were out of verm except for a $20, 2 cubic feet bag of Vigoro brand verm from Home Depot, so I had to wait until today since it's payday. I also picked up a brick of coir to spawn some popcorn tomorrow.

Well, I soaked the cakes the other day in there jars for 12 hrs, and since I couldn't get the verm then, I just drained em and put the lids back on. I decided against using the sterile coir/verm to roll em in, but got that done now.

One thing that sucks, the experiment is screwed now, I mixed up the cakes while verm-rolling today, I was in a hurry and just didn't think about it, and rolled em, then was like "FFFUUUUCCKKK!" I really wanted to see if the coffee would add any size or # to the fruits. After dunking and sealing the lids back up, today a couple have pins forming. I am wondering if the compactedness of the cakes will hinder fruiting, they are pretty solid.

They are in my mini SG, all normal holes and config, 3-4"wet(salt water) perlite, on jar lid rings, all the old fashioned way lol. I will check tomorrow to see if I think any holes need to be taped up to slow the FAE, which I had to do last time I used this FC, we'll see.

I was about to take a pic of the Lindt choco-ball FC which has a couple pins, but my phone died,so I'll do that later and post it.

Here is the pins in that Lindt chocolate salty balls fc-IMG_20190227_085449.jpg It was only a 1/4 pint cake, mixed someting like 1:2 spawn/sub, so maybe there wont be too many fruits from it, oh well, it's cute I guess.

Well damnit I doubt these jars are gonna fruit. They are still getting whiter, I just think it's a lost cause. The problem was that they got very compacted somehow during the PC cycle, maybe I had the burner up too high and it cooked too much.

There is some bruising on the edges, and underneath the cakes in the little pie pans they sit in, there is a 1/4" inch layer of moist verm that is getting colonized a lil bit with globs of myc, the one in the pic grew a white glob that started getting tan colored, I thought it might be a cap at first, as I've seen brown spots that formed into caps that on a sub surface with the stipe growing later, but this is just a ball of myc with a tan tint to it-

I am gonna try another batchn and toss these when the new ones are ready. I have a syringe of P Tamps I made from a print that a really cool member here gave me, and I made a blue meanie(cube) syringe from a print I made. i put a tiny bit on agar to test it, so I might do some PFs of both of those.

Instead of tossing, crumble and spawn 1:1 to some wet vermiculite. If it's colonized but too dense for the myc to breath, it might fruit. You could have had just bad luck on the genetics though. I had one cake grow that only fruited one out of nine cakes.

Yeah, good idea, I'd rather get what I can from em, thanks. Oh hey JK, do you know what causes the myc blobs on the verm?

No idea on the blobs. Fairly common though.

Wow, I checked these cakes today expecting that I would be crumbling them up to bulk later, and there are some pins!

Ha, dude I have showed some patience with these, they were nocced up on Jan 23, that's 2 months ago lol! I thought the pins would abort, the edges of the cakes are always bruised a little. There are some pins growing right from the wet verm layer in the bottom of the mini pie pans, the cakes sit on about 1/4" of moist verm-IMG_20190323_191222.jpg IMG_20190323_191239.jpg IMG_20190323_175031.jpg

Man, these things dry out quickly, 2 days ago I had filled the mini pie pans with water to bottom-water them, and I misted them until they felt heavy with moisture, all the fruits survived and matured on 3 of them but the other 3 are not ready, ad they are light again when lifted, I can't believe how much moisture the fruits use up, plus they are in a SGFC, though I did tape a lot of the holes in the mid-section of the tub it's still too much fae.

Here's the flush from 3 of them-IMG_20190328_113711.jpg

I really dislike SGFCs for cakes. I always have a hard time keeping them from drying out, too. Id rather use a tote with a couple larger holes covered with micropore or poly, and fan as neccessary. I even prefer unmodified totes, I just crack the lid and fan a few times a day.

Ive stopped growing with pretty much all FCs that need fanning, though. I use what I like to call a Supercharged PMP aka Poor Mans Pod when I do cakes, though its not exactly cheap.

Yeah, I didn't even think these cakes would fruit because they were so compacted in the jars and took almost 2 months to colonize, I will be tossing em out in the "graveyard" in my garden. I am hoping to get cubes growing in my yard , and all over town. Now that the weather is above freezing I am working on that, I had a jar of spore water that I took and spread around in the little park in the town I live in, also i squirted out a syringe I had of live culture/water, I want to see cubes everywhere in a few years. I want to infest the town, maybe the state with magic hahaha. I'll be spreading as many spores as I can, hopefully they can't trace where the spores came from, oh well, if the whole town was infested because of me, it would be worth the legal troubles IMO.

Is your town warm enough and covered in manure?

Ha, it has quite a bit of manure, there are farms everywhere around me. The weather is above freezing for the year pretty much(I hope), at least the past few days have been nice. I figure the spores might survive, they probably wont germinate but I had no use for the extra spore water, and I wanted to use up the myc-water to get the syringe cleaned out for new batches. I was going to the park the other day to smoke a joint so I decided that would be a good place to dump em. I will dump spores and mycelium all over this year, I might have started too early but like I said, I want the town flooded!
