Thank you. I like to think I bought a nice camera, and I've got no talent :) (sorry, no offence Pharmer, not directed at you at all. It's an inside joke to a friend who lurks, and I hope becomes less of a lurker here and shares some photos. He's got talent, for real )
The thank you is real though. I do truly appreciate you helping me get into this hobby, and as you told me, it can (if I let it) take most of my time, and all of my money :)
PS I'm still saving for that Nikon $14k lens. I just put in $1.62 after I got back from the grocery to get some veggies, I needed them to make a batch of broth in the morning. I'm moving forward on that project, but I'm not sure my eyesight can hold out until I reach my goal :)
EDIT: Sorry, I got sidetracked
f 5.6 / S 1/6000 / ISO 320 (the lake still has a lot of white snow, and there is a lot of light. Just not all of it is coming in the direction you want it to)
EDIT#2 I think a lot of my luck capturing moving targets comes from having some OCD issues, and trap shooting as a kid. I cant tell you the countless hours I've plugged away at flying clay. I think maybe more then some people have worked 9 to 5. It heled to have a family that strongly supported this.
Matching and tracking a target, and pulling the trigger to make the shot..... It's ingrained now. I'm not trying to brag, it's not really has gained me much if anything in life. I just wanted to say why I think I do well at making birds. and planes stop still in the air with my camera.

I did a little trap and skeet as a kid. My nephew almost made the Olympic team a few years back - got interested in pooter instead :) So I understand leading.
I asked about the ISO to see if you could bump up the ISO to 600 or 800 and gain another couple stops of light, then knock down the brightness of the snow during editing. That would give just a bit more detail and crispness in the feathers of the bird and stop the motion a bit more. But that's just nit-picking because that pic came out great. No sign of noise at all.
IF you were going to print your best pic of the eagles from this year the sharper image would show better on paper.
My own personal opinion on great photographers is - they're the ones who hammer away and ultimately capture one good pic a month, and one great one a year. Otherwise they're pro's who've been on somebody's payroll since they were three years old. OR those damned asian kids who seem to have been the first camera/human cyborgs. :)

As always, thank you for your advice. I'll give it a try, though the snow wont be here for much longer, the lake is breaking up pretty fast now. We got up to 75* today, but not for very long, now it's 52 and starting to rain. There will likely be open water for the birds to land on sometime next week, that's my best guess anyway.

you could Select the bird away from the background and then edit the snow to a more natural look. the bird looks great like that, the snow a might radioactive :)
the selection should be easy since the colors and contrast of the bird are stark compared to the snow. you should get a very crisp selection
I see 800 pounds of potential in that pic

did you try the Refine Edge slider in the select tool? it's pretty good at cleaning up the unwanted stuff.

Nope, that was all magic lasso. I'll have to took up the refine edge tool on U-tube, I don't think I've used it before.

Sometimes the picture you capture isn't the one you were aiming for, lol. Though I kind of like what I ended up with, in an unusual artsy kind of way :)
This was a magpie that I saw in my peripheral vision, and I turned and made a snap shot. I'm not sure what has got in it's beak, but I think it is nest building material, not lunch..

The trumpeter swans were hanging out this morning. This is one of those times when I wish I had a super telephoto lens, so I could get a bit more detail on these long range shots (200 yards +/-)

I went out to find mushrooms, but could only find one. I did find a bunch of spiders though, and though they were very small, I was able to get a few decent pics. I love those spiders!
This one was tough! Very, very small, and it kept moving around. It just didn't want its picture taken. I have no idea what kind of spider this is, but the colors are really cool:
I think this may be some type of wolf spider:
And how about some lunch.....
On one side of a branch was this mushroom:
And around the other side of the same branch was this handsome fellow. I believe its some type of jumping spider.

Was super pumped for my peonies and lilac. The rockies are fickle and I'm done trying to raise veggies til I can afford a good system.
Went for a drive lots of limbs and powerlines down. We lost power last night and most lost it today.

Did that snow come after the first picture of each plant was taken rocky?
If so, that is a true shame as they were both looking so beautiful....................................
