Just playing around with some black and white settings and trying to capture mist and fog. Capturing the cool effects of fog in a picture has been a challenge for me, and I'm still not getting the results I would like.
This pic is what I would consider one of my better results to date.

Thank you friend. On that eagle I was surprised at how well the picture captured it's eye color. You can see it better on the full resolution shot, as opposed to the reduced size pics I shared above.
This is crop of the same pic at close to full resolution.

Black and white is tricky because of the metering. The sensor usually favors light over dark and will "suggest" a setting that doesn't allow the whites to be blown out(overexposed). Or, said another way, underexposes the blacks which has the effect of not gathering detail in the darks.
So, in the editor program you can't get detail out of the darks because the sensor hasn't let in enough light to record the detail in the dark places of the photo.
Which translates into not enough detail to edit in the editor - therefore you don't get the adjustments you'd like to make to draw out some moodiness or dynamic range of light/dark in the editor.
The fix is one of those photography counter-intuitives. We need to slightly overexpose black and whites to get the detail in the darks, but not so much that the whites get blown out and ridiculous looking. With enough "over" exposure the darks are editable and the whites can be tamped down.
And all of that assumes that the light at the moment you take the pic is right.
We should have a discussion about using the histograms someday. I'm terrible about not doing what I just wrote up there^^^^^^ and about not using the histograms.
I read somewhere that keeping a composition simple and clean really beefs up the impact of black and white. Uncomplicated subjects with lots of white and lots of black make a pic more easily digested. It's an opinion but it seems to be right when I'm looking at black and whites by the great and well known photographers of yesteryear.

Well I was looking through some of my recent photos, and I came across this one. I can't decide if I captured a supersonic eagle that pulling hard enough it had condensation forming over its wings, or if I really blew this shot this badly...
I'm guessing the latter :)

Maybe you were moving between manual and auto modes? I do it all the time. Forget I was trying settings in manual, move back to Auto, then move back to manual but think I was in Auto......
My troubles? you ask? Dropped the damned 5100 three times this past week and the mirror is stuck in the down position. Might be time for a new camera. Ain't spending $250 to repair this $500 and 15 year old camera body. Was looking at the 7500 a while ago, might end up there.

You guessed exactly what I did with that pic, Phamer. Though I did kind of like my supersonic eagle story :)
I'm sorry to hear you damaged camera though, that really sucks. If it was me I think I would be looking at upgrading as well.
