I love this picture Juthro ! All the reasons pharmer just stated, but even more so for that undefinable "feel" this picture evokes.

Its a powerful image,

but there is a quiet and peaceful undertone that has a calming effect.

I think you need a gallery, with price tags on this work.................

(I suppose you know where I am going to put this)

What a awesome head shot of that moose Juthro!!! There is a lot of story going on in that pix. The main focus to me is on the ears. When photographing animals, the ears are the main issue. Notice how the ears are straight forward and attentive. When photographing any animal, having the ears as perked up as possible makes the shot. When I photograph horses I will often use a recording of animals sounds to get that shot. Nice work Juthro!!! Keep rockin that shutter...

Thank you all, you are too kind.

That is a cow moose, and her yearling was on the other side of my garage.  She was very aware of me standing on the deck, and while it didn't slow her down from munching on  greens, she never took her eye (or ears) off of me.  I wasn't going to get off the deck to try and get closer.

LOL, nor would I. I hear there are more deaths from moose than guns there. And I have seen all of you crazy Alaskans with your guns. Wild wild west indeed!

Same moose, other profile.  Taken just a few minutes after the previous picture from about 40 - 50 yards.

She was holding real still and looking back, so it made for an easy shot.  What I cropped out of this version of the photo was that she was also peeing on my lawn.

I been messing around with B&W again.  Ansel I am not, lol.  But it's fun to try and get the feel for new skills, even when your not very good at them (yet).

I would be willing to bet most of you don't a view like this at 11pm off your back porch :)

I'm not trying to brag, but I am saying I'm very thankful for what I have, and what I can share.

I think that it is special.

No question that you have a pot of gold at the end of that rainbow.

LOL, thanks Needles, as always you are very kind.

I had some trouble capturing the colors of the rainbow.  My goto strategy for faint or subtle captures is to underexpose the pic, and then bring it back carefully with PS.   As you see I can make it work some of the time, but I think that there has to be a better way.

It seems if I overexpose at all in the original pic that it washes out the faint colors, and then even with PS I have trouble bringing them back to  make a nice pic.

Do you know a better way/method for me to accomplish my goals?

Edit: I forgot to mention, I shot that pic with my 35mm prime lens.

Have you studied the histogram yet?

It gets wonky but it's a valuable tool for adding detail to an easy to underexpose pic

The theory is approximately this: by exposing slightly higher than the meter recommends you get more detail in the otherwise dark areas. Then, when you get into PS and correct the exposure for the areas you want corrected the detail in the dark areas is still there for you to manipulate as you please. If you had not upped the exposure the details would not have been captured on the sensor and noise would  have filled in the detail in underexposed areas.

Look for a kid named Dave Morrow on youtube. He explains it very well. I've taken to using it for my landscapes. Here are three super useful tutorials

Using the histogram is more work and can only be done in LiveView Mode (on our Nikons - don't know about the other camera brands)  but worth it IME.  Good for shots when you're on the tripod and have time to set up shots in advance of pushing the button. Not so good for moving wildlife etc.

I know you've told me to study this guys stuff before (IIRC, its the same guy), but I'm fairly certain that I don't have it understood properly yet.  I will try again, I would like to better understand the histogram

IME to date, when I have an overexposed pic I feel I get less back with PS then when I start with underexposed, at least on a percentage basis.  Every pic is slightly different.

This also has to do with my inability to use PS to its potential.  It (PS) can certainly do much more than I have the understanding of how to manipulate correctly, and efficiently.

I am again thankful for you patience, and your teaching my friend.  I am still a work in progress.

I don't think anybody has the ability to use PS to it's full capability, not with three lifetimes to learn it
