I tried to capture the cranes landing on the ice, and while I think I did OK at stopping time, I'm not sure if this newer telephoto lens is quite as sharp as my old one....  I sure like the speed and the silence of the AF on the new one, but I haven't had enough practice with it yet to decide if I think its as sharp as the old lens....

It's tough to capture crisp motion in dim light.

You have to push the ISO as high as it will go without it making noise, then get the fastest shutter speed you can. I'll put up a pic pdq with all the particulars showing what I mean. To perfect that shot you'd have needed bright sunlight.

So, I 'd say you've done very well with what you had to work with, especially an impromptu shot without the benefit of staging and being ready for it.

Wait til you get a good sunny day to judge the new lens. What is it btw?

You are correct, lighting this time of year is not the best with where I shoot from.  This time of year the sun is always coming from behind anything on the lake.  Sometimes behind and to right, or behind and to the left, depending on the time of day, but allays from behind.  It will move more directly into an overhead arc as we progress farther into summertime.

I was looking forward to testing out the new lens at the airshow this year.  But I am fairly certain that it has been, or will be canceled, due to current world conditions.   Kind of a bummer, but I'll find other things to shoot.

The birds BTW, are the mated pair of sandhills cranes, returning to nest again this year.   As always,  I am happy to see them arrive.

Ow hell, I just realized you were asking about the lens, and not the birds, lol.

I didn't get anything fancy, I got a refurbished Nikon VR DX 70-300mm, f/4.5-6.3.

I got it to replace my ailing Nikon VR DX 55-300mm, f/4.5-5.6 kit lens.   Overall I have been very happy with the performance of my kit lens, but it was cheaper to buy the 70-300 refurbished from B&H, then it was to get the sticky AF repaired (by Nikon) on my kit lens.

One of the advantages I like about the new lens is that it has the pulse motor AF system, and is super fast and quiet.  It also allows manual manipulation of the focus ring, even in auto focus mode.  The old lens has Nikon's silent wave motor design.  It is far from silent, is slower then the newer style.   It does not allow manual manipulation of the focus without going into the camera set up menu and completely turning off the auto focus motor.

But with that said, it was the old lens, and focus system that has worked so well for me stopping fighter jets speeding along at 600mph +.  So I guess we will wait and see,

at noon, f8, shutter 1/2500, ISO 800

shot with the same lens you replaced

I had to earn this one, fortunately the nest was close to where we vacationed and these birds were very comfortable with people around. Man and camera were only 40 feet from the nest!

Day one - got the exposure close

Day two - got the exposure right and depth of field close

Day three - got ISO right

Day four - got shutter speed right

Next day we came home. TV screens at the airport screeming CORONA!!!!!!!   Next day airports shut down

had lotsa luck with this pic and everything else.

Beauty pic, Pharmer.

I totally know that the 55-300 will deliver supper sharp photos. Its the lens that has taken most of my best pictures, and until now, my only long lens.  The only issue I have with it is that the auto focus is getting worn out, and it gets stuck some times.   Its the new lens (the 70-300) that I'm not as sure about.

I'm not unhappy with the new lens per say, but I get the feeling it is a bit softer at 300mm, and that is where I shoot a lot of wildlife stuff at.

But this is the first summer I've had the new lens, so it deserves some more shutter time before I give final judgment on it.

The cranes are probably my favorite birds you share Juthro, and as I recall, they successfully raised a (colt?) last year.

Do you ever see the offspring return as well?

They are my favorite as well, though the Red Necked Grebe, and his floating mobile home nest are a close second :)

My understanding is that the  young cranes (colts)  stay with their parents wherever they spend their first winter, but are driven away before the parents return to their nesting grounds.

It always amazes me at how there has been virtually no life moving around the lake for so many months, and then in the period of a couple of days it just gets swamped with critters looking to set up shop.

As long as I'm being a thread hog, I'll share this bitter sweet shot I got today.  I've been trying for years to get the perfect capture of a magpie's magnificent coloring from behind.  This is likely the my best attempt to date, and the damn elderberry canes were in the way, lol.

So be it.  There is always next time.

Both beautiful pics, and the canes are no minus at all.  But come back and edit that and expand both images.    Hell with it, I'll do it and maybe get nominated for pic of the month.

If you've never seen sandhill cranes do their mating dance, you've been missing out.  There is something about watching two 5' tall birds jumping, and spinning around while flapping their wings...

I think it must be somewhat how Mikey looks when he's at a festival... :)

And before Pharmer scolds me for not turning any of these pics black and white...

Though admittedly there was a little more tweaking then just a straight forward B&W conversion on these pics (both of these are cropped out of the original of the birds dancing, in the above post, BTW)

I was too drunk and stoned to reply last night, Arathu, but I wish to say thank you for the kind words.

I'm just a guy who happens to live in a place that most people will never see, and as such I almost feel some obligation to record, and share the amazing beauty I see around me.  That, and it gives me an outlet for some of my OCD issues, lol.

Here is another styled B&W that I hope y'all enjoy.

That is a neat effect you have going there Juthro. It looks like it changes the style to look painted rather than photographed. I think I may even like them more than the real thing

So we almost lost one of the cranes this morning to a goshawk attack.  Both cranes came out ok, but are still rather skiddish, as the hawk is still in the area.

This is only the second time I've been able to get pics of the goshawk since I moved to Alaska, they are very sensitive to people watching them, and dont like their picture taken, at least in my experience.
