Sought some respite in the woods and found these tiny beauties.

I think they are scarlet elf cups?

CatsandChicks!

I've never seen a cardinal get homicidal around their nests but DO NOT try this around a blue jay's nest. They will dive bomb your head until you run away shrieking. You'll be lucky if you don't bleed.

I employ a very "hands-off" approach. When I go in for the shots of the nest, it's right after she departs to go get a snack or a drink. Other than that, I'm always at least 9-10' away.

The close up of the female was achieved with a good zoom and a tripod.

Plus they're used to me, I smoke on the porch so they're used to my presence. Cardinals can live up to 15yrs, so who knows how long that they've been comfortable with the sight of me (someone's gotta be )?

Pharmer, I have a very strict "live and let live" policy. I know which animals to give a wider berth to, and that includes corvid nests. I saw a blue jay decapitate a dove when I lived in Austin.

Honestly, wild animals usually pay me no mind. The skunks hang out right next to me when I'm pasteurizing on the grill (it might be because they're blind as shit). I can walk up to the rabbits slowly and sit about 5' away from them and they just keep nibbling grass.

Here's a shot of one of the skunks (last year I identified at least 7 individuals).

I posted another shot of the baby cardinal here:

That's the thread where I'll post all the pics.

Thank you Juthro, we have to break glass to test the integrity of the tempering furnace every day. I took a larger piece home and this was the result.

In honor of social distancing, I took a 20 min drive to the north to get a view of spring time in Alaska.

So the resident attack eagle made its appearance on the pond today.  It was trying really hard to take out one of the adult cranes.  There was the loss of a lot of feathers from both birds.

Here is a pic of the eagle getting ready to launch another attack from above.  Is it just me or does it look like its smiling?

oooooh! good stuff

I'm practicing using the multiple exposure/burst mode for moments just like hot eagle-on-crane action

Since we've moved there are many more opportunities for the nature stuff.

Haven't pulled the trigger on buying the D750 yet. It will burst 7 times where the D5100 only five and only if it feels like it. The last pic of the osprey was set to a 5 burst but only did three. Luckily it worked out anyway.

I hear you, as much as I love my D5500, I would like it better if it had a bigger buffer.

I almost forgot to make a B&W in your honor, and I say that in all seriousness.  You've been a wonderful mentor for me with this hobby, and I wouldn't be where I am at in it without your tutelage and encouragement, so thank you, and here is your B&W
