I have some King Oysters getting stuck into some Bluegum (E. Globulus) chips, and the Shiitake blocks. The 'log' is a tube, 300mm (flat) width so ~210mm diameter, air holes care of a hand held spur wheel, and the myc. has just started colonising the chips. (I'll think about fruiting holes when it is colonised.) I 'logged' it 3 days ago.

Then there are the shiitake blocks, wrapped in plastic. They are getting stuck into bluegum as well.

Can you explain the shiitake blocks? Are they 5lb bags with hardwood sawdust pellets? Do you just inoculate those? I’m getting into gourmet and it’s like totally starting over because they are all so different!

They were in sterilised bags and I removed the blocks from the bags once they were completely colonised (and contam. resistant) and wrapped in plastic pallet wrap and put outside in the grow tent.

I sterilised the woodchips, then innoculated them with grain spawn.

ed: They are getting stuck into bluegum chips like you sometimes see as softfall in playgrounds, etc.

Kings seem to like globulous. I've thought of E. Grandis but that doesn't grow around here...

Kings continuing to colonise, and Shiitake starting a brown crust (?) I'll see how they go.

I have a friend who's never grown before, so I thought I might give him a start...

Pleurotus oestreatus in all 3. Bluegum chips in the 'logs' and pea straw in the basket.

Good question. I've been searching Amazon (UK) and it seems 9/10 products they list as HWFP are made from softwood. The few that are actually hardwood are "premium" for smoking food and not economical for hobby growing mushrooms. It shouldn't be this hard to find hardwood chips / sawdust / pellets but my search skills seem beaten in this instance. There are a couple of national companies I found who will delivery graded hardwood chips but in bulk, like tonnes of it. I only want a couple of sacks.

You have come across my problem :-). I'm going to see if I can source any from plantations. Anyone know anyone who works at cooperages (etc)? If I could get my hands on oak waste, I'd have to dry my pants...

My local hardwood store has the food grade pellets for $18 per 20lbs which seems like a normal price online.

The label said Blue Pearl Oyster but the jury is still out. (I'm thinking I mislabelled a Phoenix.)

I had what I thought was a great foto of my first King Pins... but I'm afraid they were tiny, white on white and were invisible in the foto. Flash or no flash. They might be better tomorrow...
