Hey folks! It's been a long time since I was active here.

Long story short, I got an angel investor to get me started growing again. I have my notes from my last documented grow (2012 iirc) but none of the photos. So I'm hoping folks here, especially more experienced folks, can chime in with advice as I go.

I no longer live where I can grow cannabis. That was a great mushroom room too. I live in a small apartment, but am constructing a box for my mushies. Until then, I have a little space carved out in my bedroom with a black out material (black fabric in the middle) that blocks out all light, to cover the starting tub.

My idea is to run two tubs once going. Both at different stages, so I'm always in harvest. We will see how it goes.

I finally have a seed mat with a temperature control to go under the tubs, which will help as we like it substantially cooler than the mushrooms will.

I have a small pressure cooker. Brand new. But not digital like last time. And will do two jars at the same time. Enough for one large tub. Maybe.

The tubs are fairly large. Enough to let the shrooms to fully fruit. I haven't gotten the tubs ready yet, but I plan on browsing other folks and what they have done. My tubs last time had small holes, but many. So idk what is best. Advice here is more than welcome.

The silicone on the jars is curing, and I have them stuffed with polyfill. They are these large 32oz jars. I haven't used these before. I was using small ones prior. So I hope these help things along.

I have 4 strains to choose from this time, though I hear there is not much difference when it comes to cubensies..

Golden Teachers
B+
Albino Penis Envy
AES Amazonian

I hear GT is one of the best all around to grow and consume, so I likely will start with that.

It's good to be back and I can't wait to get to know you all again. cfc75eea05e127fd3bc1ce361d2081eb.jpg8958a7a08b813c781879f3ac2e72edea.jpg79612291c4ab8418320c5fdcc043f9ed.jpg

Will do!

Last time, though, I don't remember doing a casing. I see you can buy it. Aside from loose, is there a standard way to make it? I saw at least one person using just Vermiculite.

Yeah just verm is used sometimes, or coir/verm, that is what I've used. There are other "teks" out there, do a google search and you'll find some..

If your substrate is horse shit then I wouldn't bother with a casing.

I cased my shit for years and preferred verm due to less contams.

I've recently found horse shit without casing gives me the most flushes with the least contamination.

Using worm castings this time. It's what I'm used to. I could probably get some horse manuer but IDK about bringing that into essentially an efficiency apt.

i stopped using casings with everything...i guess if you have dry spots itll make it easier...but i never realy have issues with that. and if using a casing id use verm because less contam issues. now cubes are cubes usually...but not penis envy. hands down...my favorite cubie and the strongest...more like an exotic when it comes to potency. thats what ive got to say at the moment. anymore progress on your setup?....oh and...hi :)

What's up buteo? Remember me? I second everything buteo said. I don't like casings in tubs. And PE is certainly different than other cubes, ridiculously potent, beware. Also yields are great. You'll harvest an abundance of big meaty peckers. Oh and a question for commienerd, is your silicone high temperature RTV? I only ask because I've never seen clear RTV, only black and red

Yeah I should've said before that cubes don't require a casing, accept PE strains do need one from what I've heard, don't know how true it is, I haven't done any PE myself.

That will likely be my next strain so I may try it

So lots of stuff has happened since I updated last.

I don't remember if I said it before, but I'm doing the turkey ranch popcorn method. I'm on the app so I can't see if I said that.

Simmered the popcorn. Took 2hrs or so. Then pressure cooker two jars for 90 min it was late, so I'm doing the other two tonight.
I filled each of 4 jars with 2tbs of Vermiculite, and roughly 3/4 full of popcorn.

This morning, I innouclated two jars with roughly 1/10th of the syringe, after vigorously shaking it to break up the spores, of Golden Teacher spores. At some point, I need to do a live culture I think.

Shook the jar to distribute moisture, verm, and spores, and placed in a plastic tub, which will be a fruiting tub soon, and set the pad to 82°F and covered with a light-proof curtain, and tucked it under the tub.

In the next month or so, I plan to build a box for it to go in. 6a575fea610d88371a1855d7361f0e02.jpg0ad1be368c88ec6a7709a1e7b479be95.jpg4970d619bc9a3ca24ad16cf37741a873.jpg3c3cd69ab7e63ce96ca10a2ca84b2dfa.jpg

What I do for popcorn is soak for 12 hrs in water with instant coffee and gypsum, then PC it for 20 mins at 15psi in the same coffee/gypsum water. Then I pour it out on a screen rack and spread it out to steam dry. Then I jar it up and PC for 60-70 mins. It never has excess moisture or starch and very few if any kernels are split, but it is fully cooked and stained slightly brown from coffee.

.

Oh wow. So you don't even bother boiling. I never thought about doing that.

And I guess the coffee is good for removing the starch?

UUUUUUPPPPPPDAAAATES!

So, today is one week since the first jars were inoculated and I can't really tell that two were added a day after. Looks like in a week or three we might be ready for a tub!

I feel bad.

I'm disabled and forced to work what I can. On top of that, I'm helping build a co-op and I'm just drained. So I haven't been as active as I want to be here. I apologize. I am trying.

But I have a now 2 day old update!

The jars looked pretty good so I shook em. I'll check them Sunday and if they look good, I'll get the bulk ready. If not, I'll start drilling holes at least.

Stuff is happening!!! 789e6621fdecc5db8548ddf8f1aff1b4.jpg7fc5132eb3586ffd6eb379e5c3ab40fa.jpgcaffe413c7c029f9f58f51ffff12342b.jpgf8a897bf60b3bb16c83f8e5f5997945c.jpg0dba86f6040c628e4abf9c27c74439c4.jpga292fc28125f3feded59c9f797bd8212.jpged038ff52926517413d7854cba5ff196.jpg5deb8b5cff0ae62d4c2809c0c7d5f7ea.jpg041f7ecf01f23816cb8cd26760401bdd.jpg

Unfortunately, if any mold spores or bacteria made it into the jars, or were already present, they will sprout along with the Mycelium.
In nature this is no problem but in an unnaturally sterilized environment like the jars, once mold or bacteria gets going, the rest of the project is ruined
