I'm looking for advice and how to pick shrooms in New York. Is there any way to make sure I'm not picking poisonous ones. From what I read so far Bell caps are the type that grow here. I will appreciate any advice

I think the most widely known method of identification is the blue color you will see from degradation of the psilocybin molecules when exposed to oxygen. This can be from disturbing the mushroom by squeezing it gently, or tearing it from the ground. Another method is getting a spore print from the mushroom in question. Do all your homework on it before even considering consuming it.

To name a few I have heard of that grow in New York..

Psilocybe Semilanceata

Psilocybe Ovoideocystidiata

Psilocybe Caerulipes

Panaelous Cinctulus

If anyone can give anymore insight, I am sure it would be appreciated.

The post below lists which active mushrooms grow in each state. It was probably definitive in it's day, but a lot has changed in the last 10 years. I don't think these changes have been as significant east of the Mississippi river as they are on the west coast, so the New York listing should still be accurate.
