The original recipe called for brewers yeast. If anyone has any feedback on that substitution please chime in. I’d love to hear experiences.

If they want dried brewers yeast, you can buy packets of it for not a lot of $. There is also brewers yeast nutrient for fermenting things like mead. It is an additive to help the yeast perform. Lastly, there is the yeast cake that is left behind after fermentation. I think they make Vegemite from this?

Would any of these work?

So I spoke with my professor today. I guess I didn't understand exactly what LME was. I could have figured this one out on my own for sure. Brewers yeast acts as nutrition, a vitamin more like. He did say a nutritional yeast could have been used. May try that next run. This agar will most likely still work. However, I basically added more sugar to sugar. I may be able to start my own research project sooner than expected. I am going to look into something Lions Mane related. I was reading an interesting article about pros and cons of mycelium vs fruit bodies. Also about how to get the highest beta-glucan content out of the fruit bodies. If anyone is interested in that feel free to chime in. I am more than willing to make this a community project if I can. Any suggestions need to be legal obviously. Lions Mane is not a must either. They dont grow it there often though, and I think this could change that.

I’ll buy the right stuff. It’s only .75/oz. It only calls for 1.3g/500ml. I was just trying to get by with what I had on hand. I do have some nutritional yeast here. I tried hippie3s super cakes once before I moved to grain.

I hate this agar btw. I need to remember that a lot of the stuff I am learning at school is focused on sustainability and cost effectiveness. I used 7.5g of agar knowing it should have been 10g. This stuff is not very firm at all. I put some Acadian coast to agar from a print and the loop was cutting right through the agar.
Oh well. Live and learn right?

Regardless of my feelings the agar is working surprisingly well. Got some decent growth on some transfers from the 23rd. Also from the spore swabs.

Another round of agar. This batch I used 500 ml straight oat water 10g agar 5g dextrose 1.3g brewers yeast. The last set of jars was spread a little thin so I actually bumped this up to a 750ml batch. Ran it on the stir plate for a bit to make sure it was mixed well. Going no pour with these.
Also listening to older Silversun Pickups. Can’t be upset even though my back is acting up today.

Got inside the grow chambers today. Learned a lot about controlled environment in just a few minutes. Probably gonna start setting a chamber up. Applied for summer research opportunities at Biosphere 2. https://biosphere2.org/ if anyone is interested. Pretty sick place. I’d also suggest looking up a video of “biosphere 2 lung” mind blowing engineering for the time.

Do you know the volume and make up of the substrate?

Biosphere would be pretty cool!

Chopped straw and a cotton seed meal. The focus of the research is cost effective and sustainable protein. Everything there has been researched down to bare bones. They grow a lot of cotton near by so the meal is a by-product.
I do not know the ratio yet, haven’t had to mix.

This is a really interesting thread I was reading when you first posted or real soon after. Been out of the loop big time tho and am trying to be more regular here.

I have done a little more clean up since that pic. It was a prototype, and is slowly being modified. This humidifier rips though.
