I'll spare the photos of undercolonised grain, but does turkey tail spawn have a much sweeter smell than most mushrooms (pluerotus etc)? I'm surprised, but it also doesnt smell like any contaminant I'm familiar with.

When they start to fruit, do they develop 'lumps' and then start browning like Shiitake do?

They do form little bulbous lumps when they fruit but they don't turn brown like shiitake.
Is your sub supplemented pasteurized HWFP?

Sterilised wheat bran/hwfp. Should I pop it in the fruiting tent with that section of the plastic cut out, or can I get away with horizontal slashes?

Definitely put the slits where that growth is concentrated. If it's not finding it's way out the slits you can always make them wider later.
How'd you sterilize that monster?

I sterilised in bags and then used my lfh when I transferred it to the log.

Haha here I thought you had an enormous autoclave. Keep us posted!
I wish! One that size would be "Business Class".

Those logs are awesomeness, Scott! Are there filter patches we can't see for GAE? Or is it just that you didn't zip or seal the tops? Kinda looks that way, but that would be interesting given how evenly they are colonizing top to bottom.
We should have a contest to guess how many pounds of sub. Or, better yet just tell us. Ha. Guessing 35lbs.
Also can't wait to see the results.

OK, LMAO. The very next post I clicked into, "2019 Grow Log", has Scott explaining "air holes care of a hand held spur wheel" Well that takes care of that. And brilliant idea!
This in itself is going to force me to LFH sooner rather than later.

What does everyone use as TT substrate? I have LOTS of pine chips, and I know TT will get stuck into pine. Should I supplement and sterilise, unsupplement and sterilise, or unsupplement and pasteurise?

I use HWFP and Rice Bran for all cultures that I grow. Honestly though, TT will grow on anything(probably could skip the Bran), I have had natural TT on seasoned logs for burning pop up(Apple and Cherry wood). Old Christmas tree trunks work fine as well if logs are your thing(3T Unicorn bags myself). All the best, a beautiful species to grow, BUT very slow fruiter(fast colonizer).
