@Celestial

I am finishing up the last of my flour experiments now. These two trays coming up have half flour and half grain. I didn't

have much luck with all flour. But...it's probably me. I am having a pretty bad time of it lately. But damn, colonization was

insanely good.

Next up is 4 straw-free bags. Basically running Blue Helix's sub to see how that works it. I thought I hardly used any grain

but this recipe is even less. 187g of millet across 6 quarts or so of sub.

Green... it had to be In the casing to show up this fast or when I trayed it? Maybe it wasn’t 100% when I broke down the bag?

I am soo bummed. I used alcohol on the tub and baked the casing for an hour at 300...

I’m never going to get pans to go right. This sucks.

hey brother i replied to your other thread. i don't have any first hand knowledge of heating anything in the oven. it might work but i wouldn't recommend it. pasteurize at 160° as anything higher will start to sterilize. a properly pasteurized casing will out perform a sterilized one.

Happened to me a lot too with the casing specifically. I did notice that when I applied the casing and let it grow into it before putting into fruiting I definitely noticed that problem just go away. Also changed my pasteurization tech from baking at 160 to a slow cooker at 160 center. 300 is definitely too high though and that will cause partial sterilization in pockets in the casing making way more susceptible. I’ll do a couple hours at 160 center for my casing. You could always try it and see how it compares anyway.

So I was letting the tray mature despite the green mold because I’m still dialing in the FC and have nothing else meaningful to fruit. Cheap plastic tray snapped and my hand did a Tunguska on the pins. I’m bummed, but I decided to harvest just to see what was there. Over two fresh doses, just in the larger pins. I grabbed 4 fruits from heavy clusters away from the mold and dropped them on agar. Not sure thinking is if I can grab new growth fast enough I can get clean clones. I have the LC in the fridge I believe it is clean. I’m going to pour a sleeve of plates and put some pans and Mexicana down. I have a couple of other pans on grain already. I have higher hopes for the next runs..

How do you do prep your casing JR?

Normally in a pie tin covered in foil, baked for for 3-4 hours around 200F pretty wet so it dries out some and cools overnight. This was an hour at 300F, cooled, put on pretty dry and misted the next day after sitting in a shoebox with foil and a few pinholes.

How lonw does your oven setting go. Most go to 170F but I found if I set it at 170 the center will reach 160 and goes slow to 170 up from there but I never let it reach 170f. I let it get to 165f and then turn off the oven and use a metal probe rope to make sure it stays 160f for 2 hrs and then go down overnight.

That’s for the casing and not sub though

I am confident in my sub prep. I’ll have to sort the casing problem out.

Do you add lime or a ph buffer to your casing?

I sometimes use garden lime. Usually put garden lime and gypsum in subs. This had nothing but peat/oyster shell/verm. I have hydrated lime, but I’ve never used it in a casing before.

EDIT** I should add there was more green on the side and bottom than the top. My best guess is that somewhere between listing, and leaving it too long to consolidate in the tray after breaking down is the problem. My sub had shrank before I put it in fruiting. I have a feeling it needed to consolidate in the bag a touch longer and get through the tray consolidation phase faster. If I ph adjust and use a method that produces properly hydrated sub from the start I might have better luck. I have at the minimum a couple of weeks to figure out a solid casing plan.

Putting a buffer in your casing really helps stave off molds for a bit. I like to get mine @ 8.5. With hydrated lime, that's roughly a tsp per cup of peat. That coupled with keeping the pasteurizing temps between 140-170 for about 4+ hours is what I do with my casings and they take a while to succumb to anything.

Hey MrTrippy. You should probably start looking up old grows and getting a feel for how they are done.

They don't grow like cubes and they have different requirements. Higher humidity, temps and FAE.

All the pins for clones are recovering... and covered in bacteria. I’m making up some antibiotic plates to make transfers. I’ll try a couple of small bags with the LC that’s left, try to get these clones grown out and then streak pan Cambo Jambo and a pan cyan.

Does anybody really bother with cloning pans or are y’all doing your selection from the dish and that’s all?

I try to clone, especially if you get nice sized fruits in a cluster. So far, I've cloned all the genetics I've fruited.
