This is my first time growing with an online kit. using coco and vermiculite. Harvested most of the ones i could that were mostly all side pins.Clear tubs. Sounds like people recommend trash bags, would like to try that next grow. Question is, now i am waiting for the last few side pins to mature. Noticed some of the heads have turned a dark brown colour. instead of the usual light brown. Is this a sign of an unhealthy mushroom that needs something? Could this just be dry and needing its first dunk? Hot dry climate here, instructions do not recommend spraying the sub. Just soaking for 8 hrs each flush. Going to wait overnight to see what they do. Any advice would be appreciated.

I believe usually when the cap turns dark to black it's probably an "abort" meaning the mushroom quit growing for some reason. They are still safe to harvest and eat. A pic might better help identify an issue.

I got a little excited and harvested most of them today as i was going for a dunk and just wanted to clean up the sub. Here is a side by side of what to me looks like normal shade of light brown. And now that i know what abort stands for. Judging by their small size it would make sense. Thanks for the reply

Those are not aborts! They are just less mature than the one you picked.

They grow so fast and i smoke to much weed. Its hard for me to keep track. Suppose I could use daily photos to track their progress. But now that you mention i thought i saw a few more yesterday. Perhaps they matured and i didn't really notice

Can you use coco vermiculite sub to grow most strains? Just ordered B+, Cambodian, and Alacabenzi

No expert, new to this myself. But I grew a crop of penis envy on just coir/verm a few years ago. No problems, and I think I got three flushes out of it. A cubes a cube any strain of it should be fine on coir/verm.

Not sure if this is relevant here, If not then please disregard.

But I am curious about when coir/verm began to be considered a bulk substrate? I always thought that there was a negligible amount of nutrients in coir and none at all in verm. I've been away from the hobby for awhile, so please excuse my ignorance on this matter.

Verm is still considered non nutritive, coir began taking on the new reputation when we started calling BS on the naysayers and posting pics of coir only grows. But still it is recommended to use high spawn ratios for best results. Coir only with low spawn ratios will shrink up and wither out fast

In that case I'm assuming that the spawn is providing nutrients? Is there a guideline for how much supplementation (manure/worm castings) will be adequate?

You can do spawn ratios of 1:1 or 1:2 just fine on straight coir without any supplementation at all. I do like verm though...because I just like it.

Should a guy be picking off the mushrooms as  the veils break. or just wait a day or two for them all to mature? They say this reduces potency if left to produce spores? I guess i am wondering how diligently should these ready mushrooms be harvested
