This is just a condensed version of my experience with WBS grain jars.

Materials:
Torch
70% iso
SAB
MS syringes (GT and RW)
8×1qt Mason jars
Wild Bird Seed
4-6 cups of weak diluted coffee
8qt bag of organic coir.
One 5gal bucket
An old blanket
Pillowcase
5000k light bulb
2×32qt Sterilite Gasket containers

Procedure for WBS prep:
I sifted the WBS through a colander and removed most of the bigger sunflower seeds and cracked corn (optional but I'm OCD). I then proceeded to wash the WBS several times to remove dirt and floaters until the water ran clear. I did two different batches. I soaked one batch in clean water overnight and strained and rinsed it. I then put it in a large stock pot and added some diluted coffee and water just above the WBS and brought it to a simmer for about 15 minutes. I then spread it out over a large baking sheet and let it dry. This method gave me a lot of burst grains. I then loaded it into jars (I used unmodified plastic lids) and PC'd for 90 minutes at 15psi. After the pressure dropped to zero I removed the still hot jars (wear oven mitts) I shook them to redistribute the moisture. After shaking I unscrewed the plastic unmodified lids half way. This prevents them from welding shut as they cool.

Inoculation procedure:
After they cooled I placed them in my SAB and prepped myself and my syringes for inoculation. Rub the lid and outside of the jar with 70% isopropyl alcohol soaked cotton pad. Unscrew lid completely (do not remove it) wipe syringe needle with iso and flame sterilize until glowing red/orange squeeze out a drop of water from syringe to cool. Lift lid part partially and inoculate with 1 1/2-2cc of MS solution. Close lid and screw it shut. Wipe needle with iso flame sterilize and repeat for your other jars. When inoculation is done some say shake some say leave it alone. IMO shaking distributes the MS solution to more grains and more even colonization. It does add more time to colonization.

Colonization:
I used unmodified plastic lids. If you are doing the same keep the lids loose (about 1/4-1/2 turn from tight) tighten shut before each shake and re-loosen after.
After the initial shake let sit until colonized at 20-30% leaving it to recover and reach 50-75% colonized. Leave it to colonize to 100% and shake before spawning to bulk substrate.

Preparing Substrate:
I used organic bagged loose coir. It came with 8 dry quarts.
Place coir into a pillowcase and place pillowcase in a bucket like you would do a garbage bag in a trash can. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. I did not measure the amount of water but that's where the pillowcase came in handy. After the water started to boil I poured it into my bucket and put a lid on it and wrapped the bucket in a blanket. Let it sit overnight. The next day remove the pillowcase with the coir and squeeze out all the excess water. This is where measuring the water would have helped. Keep squeezing and pressing until the coir is at field capacity. Dump water out of your bucket and put the field capacity coir into it and put the lid back on and seal it to retain moisture.

Spawning to bulk:
Once your jars have reached 100% colonized you are ready to spawn.
Prep your tub ahead of time by cleaning it with a mixture of bleach water (1Gal water 1tsp bleach. Must be disinfecting bleach). Let the tub air dry completely. Grab your jars and shake them up until they are completely broken up. When your tub is dry remove the lids from your jars and take a smell it should smell like fresh mushrooms (if this is your first grow this is the time for a small celebratory dance) pour your jars into your tub followed by an equal amount of coir (in my tub it looked a bit bare so I added another half qt to fill it out) you want a 1:1 ratio. Mix it all up with your hands (I wear gloves because I don't like grit on my hands). Even it all out without packing it down keep it nice and airy. Some people say case it some people say you only case Penis Envy. I did 2 tubs 1 put about a half quart of coir over one (I've read it's called a psuedo casing) and left the other with exposed grains. I am using an unmodified monotub tek from the Shroomery forums. Thank you for your patience time for pictures. 315863dedba6e6c71a642fa8455c87f9.jpgd63d68e44f93e4364e1f0d49654e1c84.jpg0a1ef58e910dd42482752ce993e0dde4.jpg4714a6e9ab7b2901f5ab5f4159f17079.jpg0dd20bda70cab7028f7c956efd548232.jpg07da04d97f707feb0f7b14660aa42176.jpg2a7759ba19ea67860ff2fcab6fd22da1.jpg53c4cf06dbe8f6a1cd92d20c95e1632c.jpgb7db24be9603b20851ece963f41da1ec.jpg

I'll take a picture tomorrow but everything seems to be colonizing rapidly. Somebody upstairs wants me to grow shrooms lol.

A little nighttime mycelium photo shoot. First pic is RW second pic is GT. All seems to be going strong. da6b610674132e143c2d5c83c6e4a129.jpg2284813b3bb7e75fe47be5698998a1de.jpg

The GT seems to be growing rhizomorphic mycelium while the RW is still tomentose. Any idea why that may be?

Probably just differences in genetics, RW is supposedly a custom albino a+ that Rusty messed around with, kinda like RR's PE#6.

At least that's what I've cross-read online so far.

So I am gonna run a couple shoebox experiments. I need another light but I made do by Jerry rigging a hanging basket type set up. And I also am including some pictures of my tub's progress today. 8ce6e35b1eb2c150610ce31ce432c7f6.jpgf8634940437022c7c5e95dcda8e067f9.jpgac98c4f61a7a2787c6d35bec9a4796c3.jpg

Here the origins of rustywhyte.

Well folks it's been a long road. In March 2014 I swiped spores from AA+ and CRS on a plate together and the resulting culture took me on a journey that Mendel himself might have enjoyed. I learned so much over the course of this, it's been a humbling experience. So with extreme pleasure I would like to present the inaugural grow along for RustyWhyte and it's release into the general community.

Throughout the course of this journey there have been a few people who have stood by me and watched this whole thing unfold. This was to be my gift to the community but I can't give it to all of you. It needs to grow. I have distributed prints to certain members of this community who I believe contribute immensely, they grow this hobby. There are also a few people who are quiet members here on the shroomery but who I believe are good contributing people to the OMC and the science in general. They too have been invited to participate in this grow along. I want to stress that no one has been deliberately excluded, I chose based on a fair bit of criteria and in the hope that soon no one who wants one will be lacking the means to obtain a print in the future.

Every member of this grow has agreed to do a small giveaway or contest at the end of their grow. Links to the marketplace threads will be posted at the conclusion of their grow. Please do not ask for prints in this thread. I believe that by the conclusion of this grow there will be plenty of prints to go around. I know a lot of people have been wanting to try their hand at this and the chosen format is one that I think can achieve the most widespread distribution. I hope that a few years from now you won't be able to give one of these away.

The format of this grow along will be each participant makes a post. That post is going to chronicle their entire grow. When they go to update the post with a development, they will then copy the new addition and bump the thread with it. This will allow new viewers to catch up on a grow in the first post and then only see the updates as the thread is bumped. Should be fun.

---

If you are reading this and wondering what the hell I'm babbling about, you can
catch up with it here. I have tried to faithfully document this process and, while I had a few life changing events happen along the way it is still pretty complete.

It all started with one tub. This one. I still have it though it's been beat up a fair bit since.

Its been a long road with ups and downs. But now that I'm finished it blows my mind to look at RustyWhyte throughout the generations. How far it's come.

My apologies for waxing a bit nostalgic, please bear with me.

---

I would like to once again thank the participants here, you people are great contributors and friends. I wish all of you a fantastic grow. Let's get it rocking

It even talks about how the cross was made.
It's Columbian rust spore crossed with albino A+ and it is prone to tormentose myc but still flushes beautifully

Buzz you can also put a bag over that shoebox as a humidity dome instead of using two tubs. Just cut some slits to increase FAE if desired.
Your monotub is looking great. I bet the anticipation is killing ya

I bought a 10 pack of the shoeboxes so I figured I may as well dub it. And yeah the anticipation is killing me I can't wait to see it fully colonized let alone see my first pins.

sorry forgot the part where he discusses how he made the cross was in a link on the OP of that thread. https://www.shroomer...Number/20228521
Roughly he swabed a plate with both strains and took that to grains and then fruited it and chose the fruits with characteristics of both strains. Then grew the spores from those fruits and chose the same phenotype and repeated until it was stable
