Today I noticed something beautiful.....some grand, amazing...something truly special... love at first sight you might say... my first semperviva pin poked up to say "hello, I love you won't you tell me your name". And then I said..."sup girl, you looking fine as hell" it just gave me a sideways glance and said pshh you sir are a dog. And I just said "woof woof" that's how that went down

They’re so strong, and it’s so nice to just harvest every few weeks that I really enjoy them once they have pins. I just let them go completely gnarly.

It got cold last night, I’ve been meaning to fire this FC up and 7 hours without power at 7F left me scrambling to save things. This FC is probably perfect for Semperviva, at least once they pin. It’s just a rack in a tub with aquarium bubblers and an aquarium heater with a fan to exhaust on a timer. I doubt they even need the fan at this stage.

Harvested a couple dub style shoeboxes last night, this is the 4th flush? They went into their FC back in mid October. The only time I mess with them is to harvest, no misting or fanning. I do give them a soak after harvest. I'm hoping when the weather warms to put them outside and see what Mother Nature can do with them. Lots of side growth and weird shapes, still no spores though. These are both from the same clone! :)

Sometimes it is tough to avoid the urge to just start eating the fresh mush as I harvest them. (Un)fortunately most my work happens late at night and starting a trip at midnight quells the desire.

They turn such a deep caramel color when they are super hydrated. Standard FC vs the 100% RH one.

The biggest fruits pinned 2 weeks ago. The whole tray is just developing. I think I’m finally getting some spore production. I probably won’t print because I want to test a theory about age and potency, but I’ll get fresh swabs. The fruits mature forever.

I meant to ask how long everyone lets their Semperviva mature and whether or not you've noticed a difference in potency from extending harvest times?  I'm really just letting this one go looking for the prettiest photo op possible, but I am curious if I'm doing more harm than good in doing so.

My experience with them is very limited, so take this with a grain of salt- but when I tried that wet 11 grams from my cased grain tray back last year they were very weak-- barely any felt effects at all. But, those were not fully grown or mature, I just jumped the gun because I had a rare chance to try and journey that day.

 

A couple weeks ago when I tried a dry gram of mature fruits from my later flushes on that tray (powdered and boiled into tea, w/out ingesting the solids) I had an unmistakable trip-- not overwhelming, but say between "level" 1 or 2.

 

From now on I won't be pulling any fruits early from this species-- that much I know.

That's actually very good to know, because I've never pulled anything early, going all the way to sporulation and they are still the strongest by far I've ever eaten.  I know on the mycelated grain people let the jars go for months and they reportedly get stronger as they go... I think.  So with this tray pinning so fast I'm really curious to compare things.

I only grew them once and from my understanding, and what i have read. This species gets more potent with each flush. So the older the colony, the more potent it becomes which makes sense seems how the mycelium grain tea works well after the colonized grain has sat for months. Even with cubes, i wait until spores are dropping and i cant prove this, but for me, the potency seems significantly higher. I have not harvested a closed cap in 3 or 4 years.

As far as my Hoogs, i literally neglected them and let them grow all over the place and tangle up before i harvested them. I big ball of mess but they were potent.

They are a VERY low maintenance species IME. Definitely no need to get fussy. I just set my fan for 2 mins every 6 hours and mist once a day max. Never had any trouble with them.

What sort of timer is needed for the shadowbox fans? I want to get one but they get pretty expensive and don't want to buy one that is overkill for what I need it for?

For hoogs you can basically drown them it seems. I have a shadow box setup that forgoes perlite and is just water below a tray with an aquarium heater and bubblers. It’s 100% humidity basically. The other FC they pinned in was doing dry and soak cycles which had them standing in water. A large fan is not needed. I have a 12v 120mm computer fan knocked down to 5v but I’m not noticing it making a difference once pins are in. I’ve tried full fan, no fan, 5v fan, every hour, 3 times a day. The infinite loop timers are the most versatile.

Still not sure what the actual pinning trigger is though. Now I’m not even sure it makes sense to try to push them to pin. This tray, though different genetics might say something. It was spawned on New Years Eve and started pinning less than 3 weeks later.

Any timer with 1 minute intervals will do. Found mine at thrift stores for $3.

Microbe you neglect your hoogs? Like no fae

I put shoeboxes on top of a 6" layer of wet hydroton inside a larger tote. I would slide the lid off a little every few days. I forgot about them for 2 weeks and when i freaked out, i rushed to the room where they were kept, and to my surprise they fruited and were tangled and balled up. So to say i intentionally neglected would be inaccurate but it sure worked out for me.

Put a wedge of my Semp clone into new heavy-nutrient LC today-- and my current bag is full of pins and fruit, but they're all much smaller than the big first flush. Not certain why they are size-limited, unless maybe I didn't get the sub re-hydrated as well between flushes this time...
