Ok, first off, I'm sorry. I know there are a million other threads out there about this very subject, but every thread I have read seems to be concluded in a indecisive and oppinionated manner.

So the little research I've done seems to point to SSRI's decreasing the affects of shrooms by inhibbitin' serotonin receptors.

Has any one experienced this personally? Any enlightenment on the subject would be so much appreciated.

SSRI's don't really inhibit serotonin receptors. They inhibit the chemical process of serotonin being sucked back up by the neural network and recycled. So there is more 'floating' in your brain and more opportunities for binding to the receptors. The term "SSRI" reflects a big group of drugs that all act differently and often effect several chemicals in the brain. So your question is very hard to answer. But based on the simply perfect natural response to psilocin in the brain, it probably minimizes the trip to some degree.

Every trip is different and subjective, so people saying this or that is anecdotal only. There has not been any research that I personally have heard about that would answer the question empirically. And the only sound advice you'll get is to use at your own risk and that you should skip the dose prior to use and pick up after at your next rx'd time. Please be sure that what you are taking is in fact an ssri, and not a tricyclic or maoi or one of the other antidepressants. Go to the website or ask your pharmacist. Many people have said "I take XXX ssri so can I...." when in fact they are not taking an ssri at all. Anything other than an ssri would need further instructions or just not to do it.

While I am not a mod nor do I pretend to know what is best for this site or its users.... I urge strong caution to anyone asking or answering questions about mixing prescription psychotropics into shamanic experiences. Theres a lot of liability and if someone gets hurt there will be a lot of guilt. There may also be a lot of people who say 'go for it' who really don't know what they are talking about. Not worth it, imo.

Sorry if that is opinionated or indecisive, but thats really the best answer to your question.

** there have been no studies to research the safety or efficacy of mixing psilocybin / psilocin or other chems with synthetic psychotropic medications.

I will say that I believe that SSRIs do affect trips negatively. I have been taking an SSRI for mild depression for several years. I occasionally neglect to take my dose for long periods of time. It was during one of those periods that I had the best shroom trip of my life (up until that point), on 5.6g dried shrooms.

Shortly thereafter, I started back up on a low dose of my SSRI. I went one week, tried to trip again at the same level, no dice. I went two weeks, this time trying 7 grams. It was worse than the previous trip, barely any visuals at all. I kept doing this, spacing trips out 2 and 3 weeks at a time, until I gave up. I suspected my SSRI, so I tapered off it and then quit entirely.

It has been a month since I quit my SSRI. About two weeks ago, I had a very decent shroom (about 5 grams) at a concert. It was outdoors, so I couldn't very well gauge my visuals the same as I could indoors, but it seemed nice. Yesterday, 16 days after my concert, I woke'n shroomed on 6.5g of dried abort tea. Once again, I had one of the strongest trips of my life.

As Bobcat indicated, this is anecdotal evidence at best. But it's the only explanation I can find that jibes with my wildly varying trips. The shrooms were multispore, but they were grown in the same batch and the fruits mixed together. I cannot see the potency of my trip varying that wildly without other factors involved.

One more thing, just a general disclaimer. If you're already on an SSRI, it is inadvisable to stop it 'cold turkey'. Your body becomes acclimated to the SSRI, and you can have a serious crash once you remove it.

My use of an SSRI is not completely necessary, and I was very familiar with the come-down, so it wasn't such a big deal in my case. But if you've got serious depression, anxiety or other mental disorder, stopping your SSRI in order to get a stronger trip would probably be very foolish.

Thanks for the advice. It's much appreciated.

I'm about to get a prescription of something, for my anxiety. I am suspecting, but not positive, that it will be an SSRI. So I just thought I'd learn up on 'em, just incase.
