I ordered a few syringes of edible mushrooms and have been trying to soak up as much info as I can before they get here. I was looking at starting with agar and possibly direct injection also. If you could help with any tips insights, I'd appreciate it greatly! I'm starting with general ideas for agar, spawn and bulk ingredients.

Chicken of the Woods:

AGAR-MEA w/HWFP soak water

SPAWN-chicken scratch (cracked corn, wheat, sorghum) and HWFP

BULK-HWFP Rice bran (Phish's recipe), maybe higher supplement %? Spent subs from other grows?

*low moisture then cold water injection and 24hr. in fridge.

Elm Oysters:

AGAR-MEA w/HWFP soak water

SPAWN-HWFP, straw cubes

BULK- HWFP, straw cubes, rice bran, straw

Hen of the Woods:

AGAR-MEA w/HWFP soak water

SPAWN- chicken scratch and HWFP

BULK-80% HWFP, 10% cacti soil, 8% wheat bran, 1% DME, 1% gypsum

King Oysters:

AGAR-MEA

SPAWN-chicken scratch

BULK-straw pellets, card board, news paper

Lion's Mane:

AGAR-MEA

SPAWN-brown rice, millet

Bulk-barley, millet, wheat bran, molasses

Pioppino:

AGAR-MEA w/HWFP soak water

SPAWN-chicken scratch, HWFP, straw pellets

BULK-HWFP, HW chips, wheat bran, straw cubes

Thank you for taking a look.

Are the syringes spore or liquid culture (live mycelium)?

If the later, no need for agar; LC to grain would be where I'd start.

Hello Cuboid, yes, they were liquid mycelium syringes. It was probably over kill but I made agar and LCs as back up as well as going to grain. In a few more weeks I'll start some more spawn when I G2G the current spawn.

I learned a lot about making bulk material  this weekend, a bunch of what not to do and a little what to do. I wanted to fill two tiny laundry baskets with bulk for Elm and King oyster spawn..... I made enough bulk to do this and for 6 qt jars and a 3 qt log. :) I used agar wedges to inoculate the mini baskets and log. For the jars, I left an open cylinder in the center when I packed them, before the PC. I filled the holes with colonized scratch.

Armed with a more accurate recipe, I also made a 6.3 qt tub for HOTW and used colonized scratch to inoculate. In addition,  2 - 3 qt logs of Peppino that I used agar on. I need to make more bulk for COTW grains, King oyster grains, Peppino grains and Lion's Mane grains for fruiting and supplements.

A couple other learning moments, add the gypsum, supplements and any other small material after the initial soak. For jars,  I'll use a bigger diameter cylinder to form a hole for grains to be dumped in.

I'd expand each syringe out into quarts of LC.

Great idea C&B! I did make 2 pint LC from each syringe, I'll need to expand from there. I have a lot to learn about timing between batches to attempt a constant supply. I would like enough for my family with some extra to share.
With the LC, I can just inoculate with lots of solution to bulk rather than grains to bulk or some other expansion of the mycelium?

I don't have a ton of experience with growing large amounts (read bulk) of gourmet, but I'm confident that one could use LC straight to a unicorn bag of sterilized HWP. Most gourmets are really fast colonizers and will tear through a sub very quickly, IMHO.

Don't take my word for it though. Go read some threads on gourmets.

Seeing how fast some of the bulk has responded to the grain spawn, I'd guess you could shoot LC or agar water directly into the bulk. Kind of like a giant PF cake. :)

Here is Elm oyster tearing through the bulk. I poured grains into a cylinder in the center of the bulk, this was just a little grain left on top.

Have fun digging that out, or are you fruiting out of the top, Oss & Oeric style?

The jars I'm going to attempt to fruit out the top of. I did make some logs and a few other shapes to test out. I've so much to learn still! PCed the last of the bulk, going to inoculate them today. Then to start making a temp controlled fruiting chamber (refrigerator).

I guess this is turning into a grow log so, here are some more pics. First is HW/straw mix for the oysters and Peppino, showing canning funnel and tube to make cylinder. 2nd photo is packed jar with cylinder in place. 3rd photo is a look at HW/cacti soil mix for COTW, HOTW and LM. Last photo is Lion's Mane for edible mycelium with brown rice, pearled barley and a touch of millet.

The Elm oysters are almost done, do I case the top of the jars before going in the fruiting chamber? I was thinking 1/4" coir?

A little update, Elm Oysters going crazy, tons of babies! I added a "glug" of water and a 1/4" of moist COIR to the top of the quart jars.

COTW, both quart jars and 6.2 qt bulk, received water and 24hrs in the fridge. Love the orange mycelium.

HOTW, filling out qt jars, will get water and COIR before the FC. I did have a 6.2 bulk that started showing contam on a corner. I cut a shoe box worth of sub away from the contam and put it in a shoe box. Mostly a Hail Mary but who knows?

Pioppino filling out 1/2 gallon jars, will eventually receive COIR and water before FC.

Lion's Mane in 1/2 gallon on brown rice, pearled barely and a pinch of millet. I also have a qt jar and a "log"of LM on wood sub.

"Logs" of King Oyster almost done colonizing. Will soak before FC, still toying w/the idea of coating in COIR.

Yoshi, where did you get your gourmet syringes? I'm not getting any just yet, but I'm compiling a personal list of sources for when the time comes to get some..

Liquid Fungi had a sale on Amzn $40 for 5 syringes. I also purchased Piopinno from a different source on Amzn but don't remember the name.
