I’d like to start growing some Psilocybe Mexicanas and maybe down the road a bit to try some pan cyans. I’m thinking through some ideas of building an automated fruiting chamber. I will just barely have enough space for a medium to large plastic tote in a closet.

A couple member’s threads gave me some ideas to work with:
DonShadow’s shadowbox:

https://mycotopia.ne...-grow-tutorial/

And jakeoncod419’s JOC Pan Tek, look towards to end of the first post where he’s using plastic totes for fruiting chambers:

https://mycotopia.ne...58-joc-pan-tek/

I’m leaning towards something more like the JOC pan tek version. I don’t really care for using perlite if I don’t have to.

I’m considering using an ultrasonic humidifier to keep the humidity up, attached by a hose. Then maybe use a computer fan like DonShadow to pull in fresh air.

I already have a digital timer, I will likely need to get one more, to control the humidifier and fan.

Does anyone have suggestions? My goal is to be able to just let it run throughout the day while I’m out at work & running errands, and not have to constantly mist & fan.

My high tech set up, an aquarium pump bubbling through water with some H2O2 added. My humidity was too high so I added a second jar with perlite and a touch of salt water in the bottom. From the second jar, it goes into a gasket tote (or 2) where I have my specimens. My set up holds 6-5 cup containers or eventually 2-shoe boxes if I want. Not perfect but seems to be working OK for now.

You guys have some fancy setups for fc's.....

While I'm unaware of the species being cultivated if it's just intended for p.cubensis then its overkill really.

Heres my fc
20200717_115343.jpg

Unmodified, humidity blanket better known as seran wrap....

When fruiting bulky material (not cakes, cakes require 99% r.h) but bulk can be as low as 72-80r.h and that's about exactly the kind of humidity a blanket provides....I should be saying seran wrap just so no one covers their tub with a dusty old blanket but seran wrap is what I use as a humidity blanket.
Current grow

Here is another example

Just dont forget to poke some pin sized holes in the cover or the r.h will be to high.

I keep telling ya's p.cubensis and humidity blankets are the new way that's old cause I invented it :p

@YoshiTrainer how much FAE do you think you get with that setup? It looks simple enough, and I do have most of those supplies already. I suppose I’m not quite as concerned about how well it’ll keep up with the requirements for ps. mex, but if I move to pans after that I know I want a lot of FAE along with the high humidity. I read through Asura’s setup (actually I think I followed a link you posted in another thread) and he appears to go to great lengths to have consistently high humidity with a lot of FAE.

What are you growing in that FC?

@FunG thank you for the extra details and pics of your setup. I’m not planning to fruit cubensis in this chamber. I’ve been growing cubes for about 4 years and they’ll fruit in just about any container, as long as the conditions are reasonable. I’m really interested in trying my hand at exotics. I made a trial run at both of these (mex & pans) around three years ago, but didn’t really get the parameters right and only managed to get a few pins to grow. I’m fairly sure that my main issue previously was inadequate FAE and humidity.

Thanks for clarifying the species elpirana.

Yea, I might need to build a fancy fc pretty soon if I'm ever to find the time to delve into pan cyans but I was thinking a tier greenhouse design. Sorry about my misunderstanding

No worries! I like the greenhouse idea too. I would probably do that if I had space for one. As it is, I will barely have space for the fruiting chamber.
I was thinking earlier today that if the FC that I end up making works well enough, I may finally try some edibles also.

ElPirana, I don't know how much FAE it provides? It is a 150 gallon aquarium pump running 24/7, flowing into 2-54 Qt tubs minus the volume of the perlite and tubs. Recently, I've gone down to 1-54Qt tub and noticed an improvement, maybe that is the right set up? More testing to be done. Right now, I have Tampaensis 'Pollock', Malabar Coast and some of Jakes's Pan crosses in the FC. In another week, I'm hoping to add a couple tubs of P. Caerulescens. I don't have a lot of "need" so these small tubs filled with a myco quart of material are nice. Plus, I was able to test 6 different "wispy" agar jars to find which fruit and clone from there. For people wanting more volume, a couple shoe boxes fit inside or you can easily run the hoses into whatever size bulk tub you choose. Definitely not as cool or dialed in as Asura's or Jake's but so far, so good and getting better!

I did notice another thing that corresponds to something Don posted in the Semp thread (I think?) about humidity recovery after fanning. I've stopped fanning and just let the set up work. There have been a lot of variables changed recently but it seems not having massive FAE drops has helped a lot!

One last minor thing, I do rotate the big gasket tub daily for more even light exposure and FAE.

I wonder if the recovery time that DonShadow noticed was due to too low of humidity immediately following the fae. In Asura’s thread, it appears he’s bringing the outside humidity up a bit, which when used for fae maybe it’s not dropping the humidity inside the FC quite as much.

I found a humidifier that I will probably use. 31F1A092-4BE2-46B1-B99E-632C30D34377.jpeg
I found a YouTube video where a guy modified it as a reptile humidifier. The cool thing is that the cap pops right off and you can easily add a hose to it. Then any time you need to refill, you can leave the cap/hose assembly together and attached to the fruiting chamber while taking the reservoir out to refill.

I also swung by my storage unit today and found my timer. 0DAF2603-3FAE-4BC4-B316-C2BC112829D8.jpeg

I don't want to speak for Don but in my environment, the FAE is very dry. It would make sense to add humidity to your grow room if you're using one. For my little set up, I don't mess with it much anymore. I crack the lid for a contamination check or to pick and that is it. The fruits are much healthier looking because of it.

I’m not trying to critique anyone else’s setups, I know they are far more skillful than I am. I’m just “thinking out loud” so to speak, just trying to understand things more fully. I have much to learn!!

When I first got started, I attempted to automate my tubs... I found that with cubes it is complete overkill... With cubes, FAE is less important than other tubs and if you are not over fanning... Compared to other strains, cubes really don't need all that much FAE. To me, you only need FAE to help ward of contamination and even then it is limited needed. I do not provide any FAE to my bags and I don't see much if any difference than with my tubs if I am providing FAE... If you do not provide too much FAE, you will have an easier time maintaining your humidity levels. A light misting every day or two and a couple fans a day (if that) is all that is really needed... Quite often, my best results come when I get busy with life and completely forget to mess with my projects...

If you are trying to grow strains like oysters, you will find that the extra FAE and automated humidity control will give you a significant benefit...

Thanks PJ. I’m not planning to grow any cubensis in this fruiting chamber. I’m really neglectful of my cubensis grows, the tubs have holes with polyfil and a small fan running nearby, so I actually never mist and fan.

This will be for exotics and edibles. I have some mycelium for oysters and I would love to grow them out. This’ll probably be a multi-use chamber for only those mushrooms that benefit from the higher fae and humidity.

Dude...I bought INSANE toys for doing this with.....hahahaha

I'm not even going to elaborate too much here but it definitely goes along the lines of what you are working towards.......

We'll just say environmentally controlling an 8X10 greenhouse........

I need to order my sensors now and design/build a floor to keep insects and other pests OUT......

Programming in progress.....

Good stuff!
